So, I got OY back... temporarily. My neighbor mechanic thought he had it sorted out, but after I drove it for a bit, it's not right yet. More on that later.
However, I did get the new leaf springs and all four shocks on, and I am very pleased with the stance OY has now. It's just what I wanted! Sits up just a bit in the back, but not too much.

About the KYB's. Turns out they're stiffer than a 18 year old, well you know.:p Had them on my car until recently, and now switched to Monroe OESpectrum's. Much nicer ride.
Unfortunately, I think Aspen500 might be right. I didn't drive it much, but the ride seems choppy and rough. I have the KYB Gas Adjust on all four wheels, and it might be too much. OY is a cruiser, not a performer. So, I am not sure if I will keep them on or not. I'll have to drive it some more to see.

I recently took the KYB`s off the 77 Aspen for the same reason. Too harsh a ride. Those shocks seem like they were made for a larger heavier vehicle. I gave them to a member here.

OY looks like he has that new car stance now! How many leaves did you get in the new rear springs? how many leaves did your old springs have?

Thanks Darth-Car. I'm really happy with the new look. The difference is very noticeable to me. It made me think of what OY must have looked like as a new car sitting in the lot. :) The new springs have five leaves in them, as did the original ones. I think all wagons came with five leaves.

Well, I think I found out why! The right rear tire has broken belts, and wobbles severely when driving. Well, I needed new tires anyway because the Tiger Paws are cracking from age although they have lots of tread left. I like the looks of them but I find now that Uniroyal doesn't make the GTS white lettered tires anymore. So, that leaves Cooper Cobras, or BF Goodrich T/A's. Hummm. I'm not crazy about the looks of the Cobras, and the T/A's are too darn expensive for a car that doesn't get driven much and will age out before they wear out. So now I am considering blackwalls. Blackwalls might suit the subtle, sleeper look that I am shooting for.... or.... it might make it too plain. Decisions. o_O

T\A will crack between the tread in only a few years, a good quality passenger car black wall would probably have alot longer service life.

Well, whatever I buy, it will age out before wear out, so I sure don't need to spend another $200 or so simply for white letter tires if they are only going to be prone to cracking. My friend with his '75 Dart Sport has blackwalls on it with the Rally Wheels, and I like that look, so...

These cars just cry out for white walls!
Yes, they do look nice with them and I think a lot if not most all of the Rally and Road Wheels had whitewalls originally. I thought about it, but it isn't the look that I'm going for. I'm not sure what I would call it, but I want OY to be "plain vanilla wrapper" on the outside, and '70's Special Edition on the inside. Sort of a sleeper look - but one that actually HAS it's original Super Six still in place. :D I don't know....just C L E A N and Comfy!! (subject to change without notice :p)

Red Lines, now there would be a look. People would say, "could it be there is something more potent about that grocery getter than we know??" :D

My BFG's are going on 7 years old and absolutely no cracking of any kind. Only complaint I have is, the white letters on the rear tires turn yellow and no amount of leaning changes it. They've been like that right from the get go. I've used an angle die grinder and Roloc disc to shave the top layer off the letters three times now and they become bright white again. Just like a hardwood floor can only be sanded so many times, the letters are there now. Fronts are white as a ghost and stay that way.

About the KYB's.............Since replacing them with the Monroe OESpectrum's, it is MUCH nicer to drive. Like night and day difference.

I agree with you OY on the Cooper Cobra's. Something about them just doesn't "look right".

You need to use the paint on your TAs, I've read it depends on where they are made if they turn brown or not.

Lol! The answer to that question would be "nope". :D

Not the first time I have heard that same complaint. The Tiger Paws have stayed white, and they are old. I need to find out how old - I have to find that post where someone told how to read the date code. Anyway, yellowing white letters is another reason I think I am going with blackwalls.
About the KYB's.....
Oh boy. I hope that the busted belts are what is making it ride rough. I really don't want to flush the cost of the KYB's down the drain and spend even more $$ to put on Monroes (which I have had before and liked).

I don't know exactly what it is, but I think it's the font of the letters I don't like....maybe the name "Cobra" too. o_O

AS to the pick-up coils; 285/385 is just right.
But they are polarity sensitive. SBM units are different from /6 &440 which distributor shafts rotate in reverse to SBMs. And Lean-burn models may also be different from non-lean-burn; not sure.
They are color-coded. IIRC SBMs have a black and an orange wire. And;Counter-rotating have a black and I think a gray. Do not swap them.
Put a timing light on your engine and observe the advance marks at idle. Then slowly rev it up; the advance mech should slowly, progressively advance the marks steadily on the way to about 3600 rpm. There should not be any jumping around, dropped sparks, or multiple sparks in the wrong place from those that went before. This proves the polarity is probably correct.
That pick-up coil is a signal generator, and you can test it. Disconnect the D from everything and pull it out of the engine. Hook it to an analog ohmmeter , set to indicating very small voltage, then slowly spin the driveshaft while observing the needle. You should see a steady blip on the needle to about 1/2 volt, or more. If it is erratic, spin the other way. Make sure the spin direction that it works properly, matches the spin direction of the engine.
These devices generally work for decades and decades and fail catastrophically if they do.
As to the ECUs , any ECU will work on ANY engine, some better or worse than others; but, they don't care how many cylinders it is firing. They only care about receiving the electrical pulse from the pick up. And of course power in, and case ground back to the battery.

The source of an intermittent miss, in order of most likely, usually is; a fuel contamination issue, an AFR issue, or a valve sealing issue. Sometimes an over-advanced ignition timing issue.
Sooty plugs may be manifesting the miss, but the ultimate source of that goes back to one of the aforementioned; don't be fooled.
Plug-gaps go with the coil; crap coils use tight gaps, hi-powered coils can use more gap. Generally, a gap of .035 is doable, and sufficient.

Already tried that, did one letter and it looked like absolute crap.

OY, the date code is the 4 digits inside the oval. First 2 are the week of manufacture, second two are the year. 2112 would be the 21st week of 2012, for example. (or the name of a Rush album, lol)

I wonder if the rubber on the T/As absorbs exhaust fumes and turns brown. The front's don't, so its not the rubber itself or the brake dust doing it.

It's in the manufacturing process of the bonding process of the white, its solvent coming to the top.
Only certain sizes are doing this.
