Then there's the people, like me, that decided to be an auto tech while in high school (class of '82) and have to diagnose and repair all the computer controlled items, among other things on the modern automobile. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be honest, it's not that bad BUT if I had known what cars would become 40 years later, I'd have kept cars as a hobby and chose a different profession. Yeah I know, hindsight is always 20/20 right? lol On the upside, an auto tech never has to worry about being unemployed (if you're good at it). Longest I went without a job is 2 weeks back in '07 when the Ford dealer I worked at for 21 years closed, suddenly, with 3 hours notice............................

Sorry for going off on a tangent in the Random Pics thread. Oops.

2020 AWD Challenger GT got some sweet mud terrains and will be getting a lift kit put on it soon enough; and a snow plow for winter.

Just hope they don't strip the trans to transfer case coupler splined shaft, lol! It's the weak link. They're made of unobtanium, at least for early teens models (like 2010-2015). Not available new, aftermarket or used (nobody will sell them separately). Only way is to buy scrapyard trans/t-case assy and take the shaft out of it.

Sounds a lot like Fords AWD from late 2000s early teens. Ford decided the transfer case/power take off unit (whatever the hell they call it) and its 8oz of gear oil would never need to be serviced during the vehicles life time. Not even a drain plug on the thing.

When (not if) they fail, it's a $1,200 to $1,600 repair (new power transfer unit plus labor) depending on the model. Yep, 8 oz of 75W90 and no drain plug to change it. Buried between the rear exhaust manifold/cat assy and engine. Geniuses! P.S. they still make them the same way now. Only difference is air ducts for cooling which seems to help a lot.

Oh yea, brilliant placement. You know when it’s time to change power transfer unit when you can smell the gear oil burning on the exhaust. Found out first hand a couple years ago with my MKZ. $1,400 later and now I barley ever drive the thing.

MoparDan .... !!!!
I just had that conversation with my brother yesterday.
I love having a car with no tracking device.
I love having a car I can replace parts on or fix parts instead of buying huge subassemblies that require you remove half the engine to install.

1969 Hemi Superbee. I haven't seen this car for 20 years, since it sat in the shop at the Ford dealer for almost a month getting a front disc brake conversion, TTI exhaust, steering/suspension rebuilt, among other things (it snowballed). It's basically been sitting in the owners airplane hangar since then. He bought it in 1978 for (get this) $2,400 and those are the same wheels it had, along with the Hooker headers, Pioneer FM/8-track under the dash, etc. Nothing like listening to a 426 Hemi idle. He did get some minor rust through(lower fenders and 1/4's) fixed recently but the majority of the paint is original yet. The guy's 70 years old and isn't afraid to drive cars the way they were intended! One of those millionaire's that you'd never guess was a millionaire since he started with nothing and built up a business from a small one building operation 45 years ago and now multi-state operations run by his nephew, but money didn't change him. He is definitely enjoying his retirement.
P.S., that's his Ford pickup he picked up down south somewhere recently, in the background of the 3rd pic, waiting it's turn in our shop.

He stopped by the shop this afternoon and of course, I didn't have a camera but, one of the other guy's emailed these to me.

2004 Audi A4. Power windows, sunroof, locks and dome lights and a couple other things quit working. All controlled by the Comfort Module, which the fine German engineers put in an aptly named floor well below the carpet, under the drivers feet. Module is in a "sealed" box to keep it dry. Years of salty, slushy, snow covered shoes and it all melts and goes through the carpet and foam padding, gets in the box and this is the eventual result. Bonus points for anyone that can tell me what the problem was, lol. N/A new and a GOOD used one took 2 months to find (but everything works again).

I see what BudW said, with the possibility that some components overheated and burned up (the brownish spots, unless it is flux residue or some odd form of corrosion), probably due to the water ingress.
