My 1988 Fifth ave 318 V-8 was bought new in Florida. It was then moved to California. The engine computer was changed and a #9913 ( California emissions ) unit was put on. I am thinking it had the #9813 on it when the car was new. Am I correct ? What is the difference in operation between the 2 models. Thanks for your input.

This is the article from the allpar website on the Lean Burn computer

http://www.allpar.com/mopar/lean-burn.html

As far as the differences, I really don't know. I believe that the California model had a 4bbl, but that's just from some research that I have done. My Fifth was originally from Connecticut, so it's standard.

It's possible the California box is different. According to that article they had a detonation suppressor on the cali cars.

Run premium and advance the timing. :D

I was going to say it might have more emissions freindly timing, it might also have different responses to the o2 sensor readings, again erring on the side of emissions.

You can make an engine fuel for power, clean emissions, or fuel economy. Modern computers are fast enough to do a fairly good job of keeping up with all three. Back in the day that they hadn't quite worked out how to juggle all of that with the same computer, there just wasn't room to for all the programming, so compromises were made.

I'd believe you right. I cheated on my Fifth. I run premium only and advanced the distributor as far as I could without any pinging. Obviously I got to bump it a lot more with the premium. It made a large difference.

Exactly!
And the gas mileage difference outweighs the extra cost. Plus.....no f'n ethanol!
Here in the states (at least mine) there is still "up to 10%" ethanol even in the premium fuel. Theres only 3 places in the state i can get pure gasoline and its about $3.50/us gal 93 octane as opposed to 2.40/gal 91 octane. with "corn gas" premium I get 18 MPG as opposed to about 12 with 86 and a lesser timing.

It's getting harder and harder to find good gas without the garbage. Where I am my only choice is Shell 91. That's it.

I'm able to get corn-less gas from Southern States which is the same place that I get off-road diesel for the tractor. It's a little more expensive, but very much worth it. If I don't have time to run there, then I just grab Exxon premium, but that stuff is 10% ethanol. Marine sta-bil ethanol treatment helps out with that.

I don't know if it's the cheap "winter" gas, or the cold weather, but lately my car's been running like a top in the morning..

Didja ever get a hole in your straw and you get bubbles in the stream>? Got that now from the ethanol eating away in my fuel line.. kinda like a sieve, got the new line and a bender tool but haven't had time to install yet. Bit hard to start when it sits the weekend after all the gas runs back to the tank but it primes after a lick or two... watching bubbles in my fuel filter not good... Rained me out this weekend again. They did a study on the amount of alcy in the gas here in the south, varied from 2% to 18% no rhyme or reason!

Does it drip from the line? That must wreak of gas every time you drive it.

Darth car has started having a gas smell if you stop to run into the store for a moment. You come back out, and there is the smell. Yesterday I even saw the small puddle under the car as I pulled away.

They have been finally running TV ads here that reveal the junk science behind adding Ethanol to fuel to help the environment, and telling folks to call Congress to get the Ethanol out of our gas.

A couple of important questions for you; do you leave the car running when it happens, and where is the puddle? Is it more under the engine, or is towards the middle or back of the car?

I'd be more concerned about the puddle of gas than I would about the smell. ESPECIALLY if it's under the engine while it's running or not. That is just waiting to go up in flames with or without you in it. If it happens while it's running it could be a stuck float in the carb, either way you really need to find out where it's coming from. If the puddle is more towards the back of the car, obviously, there aren't as many hot parts or potential errant sparks to ignite it, but it still NEEDS to be addressed. Ever bottom out on a pot hole, or a speed bump that you didn't know was there? Going fast enough that could send sparks flying.

I am SOOOOO lucky.
I get 93 octane non ethanol close to me for the same or sometimes less money than the big 3 ethanol guys.
Best there is in the province as everyone else only have 91.

Huge difference in performance, better gas mileage and no gas problems over the crap gas.

In the M body world the owners manual says 87 acceptable/ 91 recommended.

In Calgary, you can get 93 octane premium with no ethanol content at Esso and Co-Op (because they get their gas from Esso's (actually Imperial Oil) refinery in Edmonton) gas stations. Costs the same as premium sold at other gas station.
