bought a 2001 5.9 out of a Dakota rt, hoping to swap out my tired-ass 78 318/2. Has anyone done this? What do I need?

Make sure you check inside the intake manifold for presence of oil. If it's in there, you have much work to do before the swap. There is a steel pan on the bottom of the intake, and the gasket between ALWAYS fails. You will need to get a kit from Hughs engines that fixes this problem. The problem is that the gasket fails, sucks engine oil, carbons the valves and pistons as well as inside the engine. Said carbon accumulation can plug pick up screen. Ask me how I know...

Loose the factory intake and buy a 4bbl magnum intake off eBay...$135 shipped bolts on, works great!
I love magnum swaps! Serpentine accessories and full roller??? No brainier! Everything else you need for the swap will bolt on from your 318. Oil pan and all! I have even swapped with a 62 y-block 318.... Oil pan, distributor and even the converter and push button Trans worked!
As long as you are going carb it's simple as pie! Loosing that barrel intake will really un-cork that motor! Good luck and enjoy!
Mopar to ya!

Be sure to have the heads checked for cracks between the valves. Magnum heads are notorious for doing that. May or may not be a problem, but you won't know until you check and have them verified.

I don't believe his la 318 oil pan will swap over.

If those heads are cracked, talk to Hughes and get a set of EQ magnums drilled for la manifold.

It's done. Will post pics when I get some good light! What a difference. Turns wheels like a champ now!

Got everything together, runs great when I'm stepping on it, but at low speeds, when I push the gas lightly, it chokes out. Ideas??? I have a holley600 on her
