Looking at Hoses

After I finished putzing with the seams on the trunk trying to stop the water leak before the next rain, I decided to putz with the engine compartment.

Very, very novice on the engine.

I have replaced a fuel filter with much muttering and scrapped knuckle and it took me 2 hours to do it. Could not seem to get one of the short lines on where it belonged. But I did finish it.

I'm standing in front of the engine compartment.

I remove the air filter and move the entire assembly up and over to the driver side so I can look at the carb.

I remove a little more dirt and filth from the top of the crankcase.

I look at the hoses and try to figure out from the diagram which hoses are where.

Tonight, I chose to follow the lines from the round black cylinder thats near the front passenger side of the grill (canister?). One line winds around to the back side of the carb and I feel around there making sure everything seems like it is tight and fully seated.

One line comes to the front side of the carb and here is a picture:

The hose I am holding obviously has a cracked end. That part was on the bottom side so this is twisted so you can see the crack. This hose goes on that shiny copper outlet just above it.

Seems important that this be replaced. What is it and what problems does it cause because it is cracked?

There should be a sticker on the hood I believe that shows all the hose routing. If it's not there I'm sure I have one in my FSM. If you need it I can post it.

I think I'm looking at something from the vapor canistor going to either 1) bowl vent or 2) carb
The diagram just show a big rectangle with a circle in it for the carb.

I'm currently checking the pages in my service manual but without an index, I'm still at the flip through all the pages til I find it stage. Still learning what these devices are called and whether its considered part of the engine or part of the carb , etc.

Bear with me and I'll get it straight in my head.

Alright, I finally found it under emission control system, not carb, not fuel system.

So basically I should replace that hose from the canister to the vent bowl (for sure since its cracked).
Then in chapter 25 - Emission Control Systems I should follow along all the recommended checks for tests in that chapter.

That large line is going from carburetor vent solenoid to charcoal canister. What it does is sends fuel vapors to the charcoal canister (which stores the fuel vapor from carburetor and fuel tank).

If you notice there are four hoses going to the charcoal canister.
Two are "vapor in" hoses: from the torn hose shown above and from fuel tank.
One hose leads to base of carburetor to burn off the above mentioned fuel vapors.
The small hose is the on/off switch to allow those vapors to get burned off.

Depending on what state you live in and if your car has to be emissions certified, fixing that hose may or might not be important.
The car will not run better or worse with the hose fixed. Fuel mileage will be a teensy bit better, for your engine will be burning the fuel vapors instead of allowing them to vent into the atmosphere.

The hose is not under pressure, so use whatever hose you find will work. You most likely will also need to replace the short piece of hose by canister that the same plastic pipe also attaches to.

Thank you buddy
How many feet of vacuum hoses are there ?
I look at all this and realize that some of these lines seem shorter than they should be.

There is one that is fairly tight and laying across the oil cap. Sure seems like someone before me just cut off compromised ends, reattached and kept going.

Is there some list of how long and what diameter each hose should be?

Correction: when replacing hoses, it feels more like "How many miles of . . . ".

That is not uncommon. Why do it the correct way when you can cut off, reattach and hope it stays in place.

Yes and no.
Chrysler used odd size hoses for vacuum, P/S and the like, so sometimes finding the correct size can be fun.
I will attach copies of what I have, later today.

Anytime I purchase hose, I purchase 5 or 10 feet of it and keep the remaining amount in a 16” x 24” x 14” tall clear plastic bin. That said, I go through hose maybe more so and most people do, for I have a personal fleet of vehicles to keep running.

In your case, I would take samples of your hose(s) to parts store, after you guessimate how much is needed. Then purchase about 50% more than you need (for mis-cuts and other things that happen).

I really dislike making another run to parts store over not getting enough of what I originally went to get.

Note: Most (if not all) of the part numbers listed, have long been discontinued.

Wonderful.... exactly what I was looking for.
So I think I need 5/16, 1/8 and 3/8 hoses in diameter and just however long my pocket book can handle.
I owe you big time!

Just an FYI, make sure you use hoses rated for fuel vapor for the canister lines or they won't last all that long before they're like the ones you have now. It'll be printed right on the hose.

Fuel hose will work OK but ideally you should use the actual fuel vapor hose.

We get to do the tornado dance today (in a few hours, 2-11pm CT to be exact - if you call a 9 hour window to be precise).
