I've got a 12" sub in a box in the trunk now and and not having any trunk space is starting to irritate me. I like my bumps though, so the sub can't go. What I'm thinking is replacing the torsion bars for the deck lid with gas shocks to make room to properly place enclosures under the rear speakers and making a custom box to mount two 8" subs under the rear package tray. I don't think this would be too hard and it would give me a ton of space back.

Good idea? Bad idea? Piss on it and grab a beer?

If you can figure out which length, piston travel and strength gas struts you need, and the right mounting points, they would work fine.
No idea how big subs are so, no help there. This is a guy with the original stock AM/FM stereo in his car, lol.

My '86 Dodge 600 convertible had shocks to keep the trunk open and they worked fine, they were probably used because they needed clearance for the convertible top (only converts. used them) so yah, I'm sure they'd work fine on an M-body

There isn't as much space under the package shelf as I seem to remember. I think I'm still going to try it, but it'll have to wait until after the car is put back together. I'll keep you updated.
