long cranking times after sitting 2 weeks or more

Is this because of the gas evaporating out of the carburetor? OR do I have an issue with the carb float, or a check valve in the fuel pump that is allowing fuel to drain back to the tank? Any suggestions and or remedies? One thing I enjoy most about non FI engines is that they start at the turn...

Imperial HEI conversion, where to put the ICM and Coil?

My Mopar electronic ignition control gave up while sitting over the winter, and I have decided to put an HEI in the car. The question is where to place the new parts.. Wanting to put them on the firewall, but there is very little room that does not already have something there. I'm leaning...

Lower radiator hose weeping coolant at water pump

Last summer I replaced the lower radiator hose, and cleaned the water pump inlet, because the lower hose was looking really frail. Now I have a very very slow leak at that spot. It might almost be too much to call it a leak, but I can see that it has leaked just enough to see that it was not...

"Vehicles equipped with high performance 318-4bbl engine"

Just found in a 'new to me' owners manual for an '87 5th Ave. Page 80, it suggest that any type of high speed driving, or rapid acceleration requires SAE 30 or SAE 40 oil. And or, 20W40, Or 20W-50 may be used. What in the world is going on here? I can not imagine how an extra 25 HP is...

torsion bar ride quality vs coil spring

I am interested to hear opinions and perspectives on the benefits of the torsion bar suspension. I come to the FMJ cars because I like Mopar's engineering background, and I've had dodge trucks since the 1990's. That being said, I am not clear as to why Mopar decided to use a torsion bar front...

About to do some custom wring for HEI retrofit

Where do I go to find QUALITY electrical terminals, lugs and such? I do not want this to fail due to crappy materials. . . At this moment I am believing that uninsulated terminals, with heat shrink that is crimped sounds like the best that can be done by the enthusiast. Who carries good or...

What is the best Rear end ratio for Fuel economy?

318, auto, interstate driving, road trip vehicle.. 70 MPH absolute max speed.. I have a 2.2 rear gear right now. Would a 2.7 or 3.23 be better rear gear? Would it be the same answer for a 360?

Great tone from this exhaust system

What do you think of the sound/exhaust tone this 340 makes. The owner states he is or was after the original 273 super commando "sound". Anyone have any information on what the muffler was that he put on?

Was Mopar was on to something in the late 70's (exhaust)

The link below is probably 90% entertainment, 70% advetisement, 30% useful It talks about how headers, with large long collectors improve power when combined with a merge into a single system WAAAAYYYYY back behind the usual "Y" pipe location; Ive never seen, but have heard about the Mopar...

Tranny filter change => good news? bad news!

Changed the filter on the imperial today. Fluid was still red and not burned smelling.. Bad news: the magnet was all but covered in what I assume is clutch material. I've only had 3 other transmission oil pans off to change filters in the past, and this was by far the worst.I would say there...

Holley Carb, Wanting suggestions with reoccurring flooding

I believe this is a 4160 vac Secondary carb. I'n new to Holley carbs. Last summer the imperial would not run or idle well, and it turned out to be the rear float valve had crud in it, and the high fuel level was leaking into the engine. Got an Edelbrock carb kit locally, cleaned the fuel...

    85-91 318 heads, or 318 4bbl heads

I have 318 4bbl heads on the car at this moment. It is an 82 Imperial, so those heads came on it from the factory. I can get some of the higher compression roller cam heads for $50 for the pair. Is that a good swap to boost compression in a a car that will never see over 48-5000 RPM?

    "Mopar Performance distributor ignition kit"

My Imperial has an electronic distributor and orange control module that the previous owner installed when he removed the fuel injection. I am assuming that the "performance curve" that is sold with this distributor is not right for an imperial with a 2.2 rear axle ratio. Does anyone know...

85 5th ave, Wiper bushings needed, do they exist?

I found a 5th ave at the junk yard and was going to get the wiper set up.. but there is play at the transmission joint, and where the wiper drive arms attach to the posts that go up to the wipers. It appears there is a nylon bushing right next to the metal post that does all the work on all...

new to the interior.... where to start?

Ive done enough work around the outside and underside of a vehicle to be generally comfortable. Never done any interior work. Looking for strategies that have worked for you, or a way of approaching this that does not become overwhelming.. The car smells musty after a rain. I want to remove...

Toying with the idea of a magnum swap

I just saw an advertisement for a 95 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive P/U for sale locally for $700, 130K and supposed to run good. The ad got me thinking that it would be the simplest way to improve compression, efficiency, and general street manors... It seems to me that the engine and transmission...

Thermoquad or Quadrajet Which one do I want?

I'm leaning towards a spread bore carb to replace the Holley 600 that is present on the imperial... Hoping to get some boost in fuel economy, and off idle crispness in the swap. What are your experiences with the two different type of carb? At present I do have some quadrajet's on the shelf...

The whole package that starts in the engine room...

I am purely in the brainstorming phase here, as I suspect a different rear differential would make the most impact on daily driving of my 82 imperial, and that may well happen when the 7.25 gives up. . . Not that I am going to abuse it, but I understand they are not real robust.. I am wondering...

Curses! Blue Permatex on the intake manifold gaskets

Anyone got some suggestions on how to break the seal on someone else's genius idea of using silicone on the intake manifold gaskets?? AS far as I can tell I have all of the bolts out, and my pry bar wants to bend, rather than pop the intake up.. so I am looking for ideas before I do something...

Ignition timing...?? I can't believe this thing runs at all

Last night I decided to check the plugs on my new imperial. The previous owner had removed the lean burn system as well as the fuel injection, so it is now Holley and MoPar Performance Electronic Ignition equipped. . . Car runs fine when warmed up.... OR I have no idea what a good running car...

Where to find rubber parts for J body's?

At this moment i am clueless as to where even to start... Napa is likely not a source, Nor Mopar.. Are there specialist's that cover all the aged rubber parts? Right now I am wanting a gas tank grommet? Driver and passenger door window seals would be really nice as My carpet got wet in the...

'82 Imperial basic questions from a new owner

This car has not been registered since 1999, and no sign of an inspection sticker, so I am guessing it has been sitting for at least a decade. I can see that the Fuel Injection has been removed and placed in the trunk. Holley 4bbl, and Weiand Stealth intake manifold are on the motor w/ a...

    Wire Wheel cover removal Key?

Hello Everyone, First post here, and I am 4 wheel covers away from purchasing an 82 Imperial. IT is solid, but neglected... At present I am looking for a way to get the wheel covers off, so I can break free the front pads from the brake rotors.. The wheel cover key is not to be found by the...
