Alright, gang... you've been ever so helpful, I hope you don't mind if I go to the well of knowledge again!

'77 LeBaron. All of a sudden my gas cap door wants to stay open. I'm guessing some sort of spring/latch mechanism has come off? Dunno from looking. I'll try to get a pic up in the near term. It looks undamaged...

If it's a spring load I'm thinking the latch has snapped or dislodged.

I looked for a diagram but can't find it yet....

Here's a picture of the door on my Fifth.

If memory serves my Caravelle and Volare are the same
I'd suspect some piece somewhere in this setup has broken.

Check out mine

I don't know the names of the pieces, but for easy reference I see what amounts to a hinge plate, a (u-shaped) guide wire/retainer and welded brackets with drilled holes. Comparing our pix, my U guide seems shorter than yours; indeed, the butt end does not go outside the retaining clips the way yours does. Thanks to your pic, I immediately discerned my did not thread through the inner bracket holes on the hinge plate the way yours did. It had slipped out. I was unable to put it back in place yesterday, though I came close a few times. Whether my uguide is too worn and shortened may be the reason.

Anyway, your thoughts appreciated! Here's what mine looks like...
