i sold it in Chicago around '86. It's a 78 Road Runner.

Start with your local DMV. You could tell them that you're thinking of buying the car and want to know if it's got a clear history. They may be able to provide you with some information, first and foremost being whether the car still exists. Be ready for that potential buzzkill.
