He was definitely the craziest of the bunch, hands down. The first guy listed, though... man, 542 confirmed kills on iron sights?! That's a freakin' shooter right there.

That's a pretty cool article! I'd heard of York before, but not that particular story. When he was a seargent he accidentaly wandered up behind a german trench unnoticed. He started at one end, and just nudged the first man with his gun barrel, and when they looked he motioned with it like "hands up" he took their weapon and moved on to the next guy. he cleared the entire trench like that. when asked about later the germans thought he was the point man for an entire company, but no, it was just him.

wow makes life just a little boring by comparison . some of the accounts of G.I. s during WW2 are almost unbelievable , and at times totally crazy but they did the job at hand . that's why they are the greatest generation
