If I threw $600 at a good machine shop and gave them this engine, would I be better off than taking in the first?

Both of the 360s would require an oil pan swap to fit in a car, so add that expense. $600 won't get you very far in a machine shop these days, but far enough I suppose. The motorhome engine might require hardened exhaust seats; it's hard to say with a truck engine. Regardless, you're almost always ahead with a 360 v. a 318. As far as value goes, I'd rather start with a core engine and build exactly what I want rather than buy what someone else thought was good. With 87K already on the 318, you're buying a well-used engine anyhow, and other than the Chinese "air gap" intake and fancy valve covers (about $250 new), I don't see much else to warrant the price.

I don't know who Bob Bowman is, but I can tell you this: he may build for IHRA and World of Outlaws, but unless the owner of the 318 spent the kind of money professional racers do, this driver-type rebuild was likely no better than the local production machine shop's work... now with almost 90K of wear on it.

I would start with either of the 360s (preferably the '73, being low miles and no mention of smoke) and go through it. Parts cost is the same, and you'll get way more bang for your buck out of a 360. If it's an engine you want to keep and love and hug and call George, spend your money on the shortblock: good (forged) pistons, bored w/deck plates, decks trued to 9.56" parallel & perpendicular to the crank bore, new rods or resize the old ones w/ARP bolts, etc. You can spend money on the heads, intake, camshaft, etc. later but it's all wasted time if you haven't got a rock-solid foundation on which to build.

Of course, if you don't give a hoot and have more engines lying around than you have cars into which you can put 'em, you can do a slap-dash backyard rebuild on it and have some cheap fun. I'm doing that at the moment with one of my 360s... ugly, but effective. :icon_biggrin:
