I did this for my other car but it may be very usefull for someone who puts a giant sound system in their car...I had a sixty Amp Nippon Denso alternator in my car and it could keep up with two fans...a electric water pump and the head lights...

I did the whopping 120 Nippon Denso swap on my other car...I ran an 8 guage wire from the altenator and straight to the battery and I will change it to a 6 or 4 later on...it was 129.00 bucks and was made for a John Deer tractor...I jumpered the amp gauge wires together...I kept the fusable link feeding one side..I added another 10 guage wire from the battery with a 30 amp fuse to replace the old wire running from the amp to the bulkhead...this gives two feeds to the fuse box...I have a 60 maxi fuse inline at the alternator...

I gave up on the 60 amp one and found 120 amp brand new one at Spider Marine for $129.99...wow is it a handfull...

Do you have pictures of how you wired it? I have a factory 100 amp alt on my car and just removed the ac compressor. Long story short I need to get rid of the bracket that holds it together.

Yep I do let me get them tomorrow...and remember they are for an older car that had a different bulkhead connector but Mopar wired our car the same for many years..Eric

That will be great for my Cordoba and 65 Cuda I want to update as much as I can. So I will know how to do it when I find the F body I want.

Alternator wiring...

Okay I am going to post the alternator wiring pictures and such but remember this is for a different car that has a bulkhead connector...I am pretty sure that 76-80 f-bodies have a big rubber boot instead of a bulkhead connector..

I have my nippon-denso alternator set up from 440 Source..tonight I started on some of the electrical wires...all joints are crimped then soldered and then have shrink wrap on them...the big red 8 awg will go all the from the battery to the alternator...the smaller black wire will meet up with the original green wire at the voltage regulator and provide the 12vdc sensing to the alternator...the blue wire which is at the regulator and runs to the alternator will remain as the ignition on sensing wire...the red 10 awg wire with the fuseholder will replace the heavy black from the alternator to the bulkhead connector...this will power the fuse block along with the original fuseable link...I will take them off the back of the amp guage and bolt them together and cover them with tape....

Alternator wiring continued

Today I stepped up to the maxi fuse holder with 8 awg wire and a huge 50 amp fuse...this will be at the alternator and connect to the big red wire leading to the battery...got the guage cluster far enough out to bolt both of the amp guage wires together on the same stud..tomorrow night I will put it all back together...I did turn the key and lights on to make sure everything still works...tomorrow night I will start it up when all is back in place...

alternator wiring continued

I am going to try to go into great detail as I go along....I did some more of the wiring tonight for the Nipon-Denso alternator...here goes

okay here is where I connected that big 8 awg wire and the black wire serves as the battery sense for the alternator..

IMG00621-20110131-2147.jpg

the black wire from the battery (battery sense) will connect to the existing green wire that use to be connected to the voltage regulator...I already disconnected the pig tail for the voltage regulator and it is taped up in the wiring harness...the other blue wire that was hooked up to the voltage regulator was disconnected from the voltage regulator and continues on to the alternator..this will serve as the ignition on for the new alternator..

IMG00623-20110131-2149.jpg

The black 10 awg from the alternator is pulled from the bulkhead connector and replaced by the new battery feed 10 awg with a 30 amp fuse...

IMG00624-20110131-2150.jpg

It is going to be landed on the hot side of this 30 amp breaker..only because the stud of the starter relay is already busy...

IMG00622-20110131-2148.jpg

Then I finished the night by routing the big 8 awg wire all the way around to the alternator

IMG00620-20110131-2146.jpg

Hope it's not to confusing yet..next couple of days here will be a deep freeze...even might get some snow...who would have thought that...

More wiring connections and no smoke

I made the heavy 10 awg connection that runs to the bulkhead connector at the curcuit breaker...

IMG00631-20110201-2139.jpg

Made the black wire to the green wire 12 vdc sence wire near the voltage regulator...will tape it into the wiring harness once I know everything works..

IMG00632-20110201-2140.jpg

I then taped the end of the big 8 awg wire and pulled the blue and green off the alternator...put the red cable back on the battery...turned the lights and ignition on and no smoke..that's a good thing...no burning wiring...so far so good...it's getting real cold out here so will drain some fuild and remove the old alternator tomorrow..

Getting closer to that new alternator

Getting closer...got the old alternator out....cut out the heavy black wire at the alternator and the bulkhead connector..capped off the one at the alternator with heat shrink tubing...watch close here tomorrow night as the colors swap...green to blue....blue to green

IMG00634-20110202-2206.jpg

new one in there...did not have to drain any coolant..the long bolt at the bottom did not hit the water jacket..

IMG00635-20110202-2208.jpg

orange cover looks good next to that orange head...

IMG00636-20110202-2209.jpg

that connector is close to the head and to the header flange....not to worry..that's what that DEI heat tubing is for..

IMG00637-20110202-2213.jpg

yours will probably not be that close to the head or header flange because I use a shorter belt so it does not hit the electric water pump...

The end

Rember that the 60 amp one in the pictures didn't cut it so that's why I went with the bigger 120 amp one...I will find the reciept for the connector plug and offer up that info tonight....

I finished the wiring at the alternator end...remember that the blue and green wires swapped..the blue at the pigtail is the 12 vdc source and the green at the pigtail is the ignition source...

Fuse installed and dei heat tube in place

I'll reread it again I keep getting interrupted by my dog.
This is a thread that is a good read and where I got an idea on how to run a wire straight to the alternator and bypass the amp guage...they used fuseable links where as I used fuses...they aslo poked a hole through the bulkhead connector where as I didn't my wiring and bulkhead connector was all brand new...

I will have a friend who knows a lot about wiring and get him to help. Wiring and me get along as good as baking soda and vinegar.
