According to the service manual, you push a 1/16" wire into the hole in the bottom of the knob and push up on wire. To remove the retaining clip insert long nose pliers in clip hole, push down slightly and turn counterclockwise and pull knob straight up.

The knob on mine is held with a tiny set screw in the front of the knob but I think it's from an A-body(?) and is made of metal.

I think the wife's 75 Road Runner has that same knob and shifter. It's identical unless there is something I'm not seeing. I've never had it apart though.
Aspen 500, your knob is from a 76 77 F body

I now have a ratcheting shifter out of a 71 road runner installed
I've got an F-body shifter converted to ratchet. Had a Slap-Stik from an E-body and took the ratchet pieces out and put them in the F-body shifter. Wasn't too hard to do.

That is cool . I had to change the z bar to get the correct ratio of movement. The 80 Aspen that I have had the t handle in it without changing the z bar and it either had no 1 st gear or no park. The top hole on the earlier z bar is closer tothe fulcrum and the bottom one further from the fulcrum

I can't recall exactly which pieces I had to swap between the two. I was going to swap the whole shifter but then discovered the E-body trim plate was quite a bit shorter than the F-body and would leave a big gap in the console. Plus, I wanted to use my round stick and shift knob vs the rectangular stick and t-handle (which was missing) the E-body one had.
I tend to shift manually and without the ratchet mechanism it was touchy to go one gear at a time, and was easy to go too far and hit neutral, even in normal everyday driving, not to mention during "spirited driving";)

I modified the plate and this one has the round shifter I know have the original plate and an upgraded shifter. We just replaced the floors and put the interior back in today.

These short little shifter with the round knobs and buttons have to be one of my favorite stock auto shifters. I was never crazy about the t-handles. The old GM Staple handle like in the 68's weren't too bad, but I like this better.
