The Neutral safety switch

Hi all

As you may know I am having issues with my 79 LeBaron. It can cut out for no reason and there is no pattern in the cut-outs. Last time it did it was a week ago when warm and just idling in the garage.
However there was one occasion some time ago when it cut out 4 times in a row over a period of 2-3 min every time I put it in Reverse.
I have been reading other threads in here to try and get a bit wiser on our cars and then I found this thread where Aspen500 mentions the reverse/neutral safety switch.
As I understand it, the car will fail to crank if this switch is bad.
But what if the switch is bad/loose and I change from P to R ? Could this trigger a cut-out of the engine ? Or will a bad/loose switch only effect the moment when you start engine ?

The P/N switch will only cause a no crank (or no b/u lamps). It won't make the car stall.
If it stalls when going from park to reverse, I'd check all your wiring connections and grounds. Might be when the engine moves in the mounts a circuit opens up. Also, with the engine running, try wiggling, bending, moving the wire harnesses to see if it stumbles or quits.
I assume you have a column shift(?) It's possible the wiring from the ignition switch is rubbed through on the shift tube or linkage and shorting out sporadically when the shifter is moved.
Those are all just guesses and possible causes.

Ok Thanks. I Can rule out the switch then. I had it running today and tried shifting through the gears and wiggling all the wiring I could find, but I couldnt provoke it to stall. Needs more testing

Those sporadic electrical problems can be, well,,,,,,,,,a real problem. Trust me, I know (auto technician).
