Couple pics of a '53 DeSoto we've had at the shop the past few days to fix the trans leaks, and brakes. Bone stock and more or less original. It has had a little rust repair and repaint about 30 years ago, according to the owner. It's a 276 Hemi with one of those weird electrically shifted 4 speed manual transmissions with a torque converter AND a clutch. The clutch is only needed to shift into gear from neutral. Then you step on the gas, when you let up it shifts to 2nd, then if you let up again, you can move the lever from "L" to "D" and you're in 3rd, at the right speed, let up on the gas and it'll shift to 4th. Chrysler must have engineered it right because it still works fine after 64 years.

That is back when they made cars that last.
Now wit that said – where did they all go?

I hadn’t seen a Desoto in decades.

Depends on where they "lived" I suppose. In this part of the country, the vast majority rotted away a long, long, long time ago. My dad owned a '53 DeSoto very similar to this one back in the mid '50's with the Hemi and the same trans. Don't recall right now if he said or was a 2 door or 4 door (have to ask next time I go over to his house). He did say when he traded it in for an almost new '59 Plymouth that the rockers were rusted away and the lower front fenders had holes, along with the lower rear 1/4's. That was even before salt was used so much, as it is now. Don't forget also, 50 or 60 years ago, cars just didn't last as long and people would junk them out and buy a new one when the engine was shot, sometimes well before 100,000 miles even (vs overhauling the engine).

This is a pic from one of the local TV station website story of a roll over crash just across the river, on the west side of Wausau. Reason I posted it is for the fall colors, not the fire trucks.
