So, do you think an extra motor will fit in the trunk?

I see no issues with carrying an assembled 318 in the trunk of a 5th – if you have an 8¼” differential (or larger), as well as gotten rid of the Iso-Clamp differential mounts.

If you do have the Iso-Clamp differential mounts and/or a 7¼” differential – I wouldn’t chance it – for both (or either) can’t handle it.

The next thing is getting it into and out of the trunk . . .

Wish you were closer, so I could help.

Yeah I'm not going to chance it even though I have the stout rear and all that. Hell I've towed more than double that weight with a small rear and never had any problems. Nah I'm just going to have to figure something out.

Thanks for the offer.

I once towed a '97 Saturn on the highway with my Gran Fury stock 7 1/4 rear, 4 leaf springs and everything, no issues, and if it hadn't been for that cop who stopped us we would've made it all the way...

I towed a full 6'12'' U-Haul trailer from upstate NY to New Mexico with my '88 Fifth Ave - everything stock.. Had to go slow - but it made it without breaking anything.

Towing is much different than having all the weight directly on the axle.. Driving a tractor-trailer OTR showed me that much.. You have to distribute the weight decently or it will be a nightmare.. A small U-haul on the back of a Fifth hauling the engine would work fine with it strapped down and braced, a little in front of the tandems.. Reduces wobble and spreads the weight between the tandem on the trailer and the rear end of the car.

You're all on the money. I gotta find a way to pick this thing up. Just a matter of getting a hitch installed and working out logistics.

I know U-Haul will install a hitch - they did mine on my Fifth, and it is rock solid. Not sure if the shop you have near you would be as good - or the cost.. in 2007 it was about $200 to get it done if I remember correctly.

What comes down to is there's no free ride. If you put a hitch on your car and you can rent or buy a trailer of your own.....

I was wondering about this deal here, is there anything special about this 318 your wanting to go get? Since its together do you know its shape?

What im getting at is 318-s are still a dime a dozen, at least around here. I junk alot of 318 parts since even putting them on CL for free does not get them gone.

I live so far out I cant give scrap or even bags of soda cans away.

Yeah it's a low mileage roller block fifth avenue motor that came from a running car. Here in New York finding one is a real pain the butt and when junkyards do have them they've been sitting collecting rust for years. Usually guys want $600 to $900 for a magnum motor, which is great except it takes more work than I want to drop one of those in. I'd rather have a motor I can freshen up and drop in.

Plus he was selling it for like $100 which is a big savings. I gotta see if he still has it.

Sounds like there is more to the story, here.
Wait, have to stop here. Don’t want to hijack this thread.

Towing is a different story than adding weight on top of the rear differential.

With towing, the stress will be on transmission and differential gears.
When hauling the extra weight in car, the stress is on wheel bearings and other suspension parts – like the "easy to break/snap" Iso-clamp brackets.

On an unrelated topic, the 7¼” differential holds 2.5 pints (1.18 L) of lube.
The 8¼” differential holds 4.4 pints (2.08 L) lube. The same lube is also used to lubricate the wheel bearings.
1+ quart vs. 2+ quarts can make a difference on component lifespan, especially when un-checked leaks can lower levels down.

I don’t even want to hear any reply’s back on this – but when was the last time anyone here has checked the differential fluid level?
I, um, hadn’t in, um, a long time . . .

Yeah it's a low mileage roller block fifth avenue motor that came from a running car.

Like this one thats machined? Ready to assemble, baked, bored, honed, cam bearings. Things are different there because I had one call on this one and when I told him $150 I never heard anything back.

I have the whole works including brand new mopar heads from the box, balanced rotating assembly with better rods, after market pistons, new cam, new mopar roller lifters, new dogbones, new spider, ect. everything for 1/2 I have in it and not one call.

I watched a pre mag la roller 360 block all winter long at $100 that was a running motor, decided to go get it and go figure it wasnt listed any longer.

Wait, is this a motor you have and are selling, or one you picked up?
