Anyone use a aftermarket ele radio antenna?

Tried to go there with little success. The wiring is really different on the new aftermarket units. They are smaller than the factory units in every way. The wiring does not match up with the disconnects for the factory wiring inside the fonder. To use one of these you would have to take the wiring into the car through the firewall, and I never figured out how to cleanly get the old wiring out of the firewall. The factory wiring goes blindly into the car through a hidden hole behind the fender, and then comes in deep behind the dash. I was thinking it could only be successfully accessed if the HVAC housing was removed from under the glove compartment. I definitely did not want to go there. 
So I managed to find an NOS antenna that would connect up to the factory wiring in the fender.
It is important to realize that there are several different versions of the power antenna. There is the 70's F version. Then there is the early 80's M version, and then there is the post 84 version. Plus folks may try to sell you power antennas that they say are for a New Yorker, but they are for front drive K platforms, and their variants. These antennas really have no way to fit our cars because they are smaller, and not designed to go through the top of a flat fonder.

Thanks for the input. The one I have was made for an F and probably some others.
Im not super concerned about the wiring part, I was just wondering how they were as far as durability.
On my current project, ive a simple NOS am radio (I just dont like the delete plate look) and although ive some really nice oem antennas, they are not NOS quality and my Ele. unit is new and shows as new.
Id probably never use the am radio (Yes silly) and like the fully down antenna look.
Ive a really nice under dash or console 23 channel CB in the box and the matching antenna for the deck lid and could mount the up/down switch in that mess.
I guess I could run power to it and see how well it cycles and if it seems too cheesy just toss it back in the parts box.

I installed an aftermarket powered antenna into my 72 Barracuda.....using an aftermarket AM/FM/CD.
That was about ...oh...maybe 5-6 years ago (?)....regular sunny day (and some not so sunny day) rides.....cruises etc.....no issues. I really like it.......
