The few, the proud, the Ohio crowd.

Not all of our classic M's disintegrated into piles of rust.

Hello,
Acquired this diamond in the rough (with a lot of rough) recently and is the current project. 79 Volare Premier slant 6 auto. Supposedly 29,000mi but unverified. Looks like pretty much a survivor by all the original parts remaining, belts, hoses, etc. Pictures are of the day I hauled it home. Have replaced wheels with cop 15x7's, brakes all around, hd radiator, water pump, alternator, front sway bar bushings, general engine tune up, etc, etc. Not because any was bad but since all 40 yrs old want to make it a dependable driver. Want to add AC so looking for parts...

Other Mopars in the fleet:
71 Demon 340, stroked to 416 - picture below
13 Charger Daytona
07 Ram 2500 5.9L
16 Ram 1500 ecodiesel

Thanks

Welcome! That Volare coupe is a great find! Perfect color combo of light yellow with white accents. I prefer the original Road Wheels on it to the cop wheels, but "to each their own". A real eye-catcher! Your Demon is a real beauty too. What's the back story on each?

Well since you asked,
I like the road wheels also but two on the car were bent and gave it a bad shake, plus the tires were junk, so I grabbed a set of the cop wheels from a nearby mopar swap meet guy for something to ride on for now. Found a couple 14x7 road wheels (off a Torino I think) in TN that were straight but rusty for $45 so bought them and plan on refinishing a whole set to reinstall on car at some point. Need centers and trim rings eventually. The Volare came out of Indiana purchased from a gentleman that owns a funeral home. He was 2nd owner and bought it in 2008 from an older couple that purchased it new. Said previous owners wife hated the car and didn't like riding in it (maybe because no a/c?). The gentleman was a very nice old guy maybe mid 70's who said he mainly just drove it around town occasionally and only wanted back what he paid for it. He showed me the receipts and was proud of the work he had done the last 10 years which was basically nothing much except a starter, new upper radiator hose and an alternator belt. Said it just had a tune up and the "points were replaced" and spark plugs cleaned. Having already seen the electronic module mounted on the fender well I didn't disagree and commented on how well it ran. A little loud from the exhaust being about to fall off but otherwise body had no holes, just surface rust around wheel well lips, dings and scratches. I have no plans for a paint job, a couple rattle cans and some rust killer will do the trick. Interior not bad but headliner gone. Dash hasn't been hacked up and everything works. So we made the deal and I returned the next day with the car hauler.

Purchased the Demon in Feb 98 for $8500. A friend of mine took me along to look car over because he wanted to purchase it. It was an OK restoration but painted Chevy Orange at the time, a little rough body work here and there with some obvious bondo work. He wanted the car bad but the wife said no way, unless he wanted a divorce too. He already had 2 mopars and parts all over the place and that was enough. So he talks me into buying it saying how much it would be worth, blah, blah, blah. That was my 1st mopar and that is when the fever began. Had to make it better and faster so after driving it a couple years got tired of the rear main seal oil leak and decided to pull the engine and one thing led to another...engine stayed out for 3 years...full on restoration began....tied frame rails, tremec 5 speed, stroked 340, tti exhaust, tubular suspension arms, flaming river gear box, ect, etc. Bondo work turned out to be from dents, not rust so that was a plus. Receipts go in a box never to be seen again. Thing is, after 3 oil pans and a couple crank seals still have the damn rear main oil leak!! Or someplace in that area, leaves a few drops here and there. The car came out of California and spent most of its early years on the quarter mile. The fellow that brought it from CA claims he found it in that racers front yard with a tree growing up thru the engine bay, bought is as a roller and did the 1st restoration himself except for the paint job. Took it to the body shop and told them the paint code but got it back chevy orange. Was in the military and got transferred to OH so swapped the rear gear to highway friendly ratio, 3:23 maybe and drove it from there. Rear end was super winy so that was one of the 1st things I did and put 3:55 back in it as build sheet says it should have. Now I just drive it to local shows or a cruise in the county on a nice day.
Thanks for the welcome.

Fussy. I wonder what would have suited her? I think it is a beautiful car, and they ride nicely too.

He was probably told that by the person who did (or didn't) give it a tune up.

I think you found a beautiful coupe! This one looks like not too much work, and a real head turner when done! Have fun with it!

Interesting story on the Demon. It's lucky to have survived to its "retirement days" and it's nice to see it taken care of so well. Beautiful car! Welcome to the forum.
