Can't wait until I get some time (and weather) to paint my "new" cap. The real trick will be painting it so it matches. Still remember the procedure I used to paint the rest of the car (undercoat color, gun distance, air pressure at the gun, number of base coats, etc.....blah, blah, blah.).) so it should come out good, or damn close enough anyways.
The blue one looks the closest to what I remember from my F's. All metal, with a full-width slightly indented handle held on with two screws. The Aspens with "chrome" side trim had a little piece of trim attached between the handle and cap. I never owned an F that had a plastic cap, and I wonder if they were caps that were used on the later M bodies. I don't think any F's came from the factory with chrome caps, even though they might have been sold as OEM by the dealers. Nice collection Jim. I only have the one bronze cap I bought off EB which I keep in a double bolted locked, guarded safe until I'm ready to paint and install it.
Another country heard from! From my long ago memory. The cap from my 78 Lebaron, was damaged early, in the 1980's. All that I could get from, the Chrysler dealers, were chrome replacement caps. I started going into wreckers, and got one, made of plastic, in the same light grey colour, as my car. It must have not fit exactly, because I still have the original metal cover, but without the actual gas cap.
Somehow I spaced the gas cap until today. Was out in the garage and saw the Mopar box on the back of the bench and "oh yeah, that's right!"
Got it shot with Nason self etching primer. After it cures, go over it with a fine scuff pad, then base coat and clear. Not today though, the cottonwood trees are shedding big time and the fuzz is everywhere. Managed to not have any get into the primer (somehow) but it also dries fairly quick, unlike the clear. Part of my backyard almost looks like it snowed.
