Oklahoma has a high-water table (correct word to use?) so finding a house with a basement is almost impossible. The older homes that have a basement, the basement is (more or less) at ground level and dirt is piled onto the side of the house, so the first floor is roughly one floor above ground level (if that makes any sense).
I have two different detached two-car garages on my property. The bigger garage is cinder block and just to the rear of my house. The top (roof) of my storm cellar is about 2/5th of the floor of/for my garage. There are only about 5 or 6 houses with a storm cellar within a mile of my house (I’m guessing to the number, not sure how one would find out).
When we get as much rain as we have (this year), my cellar will start to accumulate water. When I looked in it Saturday, there was about 1” of water on the floor. It will dissipate quickly if we can ever get a few dry days. Being the cellar is on the side of garage, and until I get guttering installed, rain coming off the roof will allow a ton of water into it as well (example getting into the cellar, at last minute when raining).
As of today, we have received 57.2” of rain in last 365 days, 18.2” in last 60 days. Or yearly average is 36.5” of rain. It appears we’ve received ½ a year worth of rain, in last 2 months.
