So I've been at a stand still on what to do aesthetically with the doba. Its not that I dont like the look, its just that I'd like to do something more to the car and take it to that next level. Right now the car has a modern wheel/tire set up, the side cut t/a/ aar style exhaust and a third gen firebird spoiler. What I've finally came up with is a active aero package for the car. So my ideas are to make a custom hide away spolier based on a newer generation Porsche panamera and a drop down chin spolier off of the alfa romeo guilia. So far we've mapped out a design on a spare trunk lid and have made a foam mold made so far. We're looking to have the whole spolier done by carisle next year or if we cant make it to that then at least the end of next year. I have some pics for a little of the progress, but will upload and update when any progress is made.

So we ended up trimming the foam down and sanded it to get the tear drop shape we wanted for the bottom. Next we took some body filler and threw a layer so we could smooth out the imperfections.

More progress made over the last few weeks. We coated the deck lid with some gel coat and made our first mold of the upper half of the spoiler. Last night we cut the back of the deck lid open and tested the mold and lower half of the spoiler. We then cut the support out and retested from there. Next is restructuring the deck lid and fine tuning the opening.

This is so damn cool! Is it going to be speed controlled?
Yeah. Its going to be activated by some sort of air speed sensor. We're thinking itll be active at thruway speeds. From there the spoiler will hit a second mode say around 75-80 and change the pitch of the spoiler for more downforce. The front will also have a drop down chin spoiler that will activate at the same time as well.

Have you worked out the electronic yet? I'm guessing something similar to what aircraft use for speed like a pitot tube? GPS speedometer might be easier. The aftermarket stuff typically has outputs for other equipment You could use an Adruino to control the progressive deployment of the spoilers. A stepper motor could be used to drive it so the controller knows how far up it is at all times.

Sorry, this is a really cool project and you got me thinking about the controls.

Some of the electronics are planned out for what were using. We were planning on using a raspberry pi for the brain, but found out it wouldn't be able to handle the output. So we are going with a audrino board. A buddy of mine is creating a program for it and using the pitot tubes did cross our minds since the imsa guys use those for the telemetry on the cars. To make the wing function we're going with actuators. From what my buddy said he can set a certain parameter to where we want it to extend out to. The spoiler is actually going to slide in on itself to blend in with the stock design of the deck lid. Then when it hits the speed we set it at, it will pop up and slide out to the top body line of the rear quarters. Closest design to this is the 3 mode spoiler off of the newer Porsche panameras. The only difference is theirs folds out. The easy part is going to be the drop down chin spoiler. That'll just be a aluminum frame and move up and down with 2 actuators.

I didn't think of that. We may consider thst route as well. As long as we can receive a signal from the sensor to the audrino board, it should work out.

Did some metalwork over the weekend on the deck lid. We have a general design layout of the tray that the spoiler will sit in. The fit and finish is close to where we want it. We'll reuse most of the stock reinforcement work and blend it back in to the deck lid to still give it a factory look. Next will be prepping location for the actuators.

Looking nice.
The only comment I can think of is (in addition to what you are planning) is to make a car show mode where the two items will extend, then after 5 min (or so) retract then after another 5 min extend again (or similar) – maybe.

Pitot tubes? You guys are crazy. Keep it simple. You can put an output speed sensor on the transmission:

speed sensor for 727/A833
I agree. All the speed deployed spoilers I've ever run across on production cars goes off the speed signal.
Most of the other stuff you are talking about (raspberry pi, audrino board), may as well be speaking Klingon, LOL! Man I feel old all of a sudden.

It explains how he arrived at the most mechanically complicated method for measuring vehicle speed... YOU try critical thinking in structured text.

<- Uses a Siemens "Logo!" PLC to run the I/O of brakes, turnsignals, and flashers on an 1985 Omni.

Not meaning to hijack 83's thread........I'm an auto tech and work on vehicles with multiple modules that communicate on multiple networks and use multiplexed sensors, etc, etc, etc, and am able to diagnose and repair them but, when it comes to building a system from scratch,,,,,,,complete confusion! I'm in awe of those that can do things like that.

You do know that when it's all sorted out and working, we will demand a video, right?:D

Oh of course there will be a video. My one buddy is the tech genius, so he'll be doing the electrical work along with creating a new program for everything to run. He's pretty confident on the pitot tubes since you can wire them straight to the board. I did mention the speed sensor, but we'll see what happens. As for the show mode he'll make up a bypass so you can activate it with the car off and once the cars fires up it will reset everything and go back down.

After a short hiatus due to the virus, we finally got back on track with the spoiler. Metal work for the tray is complete where the spoiler will sit. My body guy even retained the factory framework under the deck lid and even kept the factory stamped numbers! It is currently in the body filler stage. Last night we shaved down the underbelly mold of the spoiler, so that it sits even with the newly created bodylines. Next will be fitting the top mold to the decklid.

After being off of the decklid project for awhile and the holiday season coming up quick, finally got back to working on the decklid at the beginning of the year. I had a decent amount of bodywork to attend to on the underside. After bodywork was finished (even with some setbacks) I sparyed a coat of etching primer over the bare metal areas. I then shot my first coat of primer on it last Friday night at about 2 am lol. Still more sanding to do and more primer to add. After all that is said and done, we'll be making a new mold for the top and actual shell for the bottom. From there well start tackling functionality of the spoiler.
