I have a 77 Aspen R/T. when i bought it the car was all original, and well i have gone with repairs of drivetrain up so i can drive it and have fun while building it up. The rear end is currently about to blow. It's an 8 1/4 with original 3.23 non posi in it. I for awhile was just gonna find an 8 3/4 to put in but would have cost me more so i'm heading a different rought. sticking with the 8 1/4 and heading for 3.55 gears. i was gonna go for 3.90s but i enjoy to drive the car as much as i can and gas prices and the rpms would just kill me. My question really is on the posi unit. Would you prefer a Auburn posi or TrueTrac locker. What would be the real difference. If you have a car with some power and probably every month you wanna have some fun and take it to the track while driving it as a daily driver which would you choose?

Stick with the 8 1/4 and heading for 3.55 gears. Yep. Yes with the Auburn cone or clutch type posi. No with locker. Locker is not really for street use.

I agree with bremereric. The 8 1/4 with 3.55s would be a perfect setup with that Auburn unit. The 8 3/4 is a lot of rear with some unwanted weight. So unless you have a small block that is running 10s or below, stick with the 8 1/4. I've beat up several of them in my van, jeep, and other mopars along the way - never had one fail. I have shattered 7 1/4s like they were made of pottery.

I went with the Locker in my Mustang as it has gears instead of clutches. Talk to the people at Strange for info. When I did they recommended the Locker as its better for cornering.

The TruTrac, from my understanding, isn't a "true" locker. It's a torque sensing unit. Basically, it doesn't lock until it's under torque (maybe over simplifying here.)
