So I'm planning on changing rear end gears before it gets cold and I bought a speedo gear with the right number of teeth, but I think I may have bought the wrong type? I didn't realize we had a special gear.

I have this:

Does the m-body use something else?

It's not a special gear, they changed the style in the late 70s to a short plastic one. You either need the right gear or need to get the speedometer cable and gear housing to match the older style gear that you bought.
There are a few recent posts about it here but I couldn't find them.
