I have the "hump" gas tank and the filler neck is almost completely horizontal. Any of you have the problem of gas backing up in it? My car constantly leaks out the filler port when trying to fill up. I did pull the filler neck one time, to replace the grommet on the tank. It was pretty clear straight through, aside from some white surface corrosion at the end. This drives me crazy. I have to hold the pump at a funny angle and let the fuel trickle in slowly. It usually still leaks a lil bit.

I've got an '08 Mustang that you have to go about half throttle on the nozzle or it keeps clicking off. Poor filler tube design. They actually go down, then back uphill some and then down to the tank. Almost has a trap built in. What were they thinking? lol

One thing you may want to check, just to rule it out or not, is the fuel tank venting. Make sure the vent line isn't restricted from the tank to the canister. If it's plugged it can cause slow filling because the air the fuel is displacing has to come back up the filler tube.

Also helps in some cases to hold the nozzle upside down when filling. Kind of awkward I know but it does seem to help.

With the filler tube having barely any slope, the fuel will only run in just so fast.

I wonder if the pump nozzle design has something to do with it also. Can't seem to handle the ARCO nozzles that well, but the Shell nozzles seem to work fine.

When I pulled my 79's tank, it had a center divider tongue that was bent a corroded. Now, here is the 77 coupe. Note the metal tongue is perfect.

I pulled the tongue out of the 79 filler neck and the problem was lessened, but still fill it slowly.

Mine has that tongue too. It has white corrosion all over it. Was thinking of soaking it in muriatic acid.

My 76 has no trouble taking the pump at full speed. I dont need to fill it very often though.
The 98 Escort wagon I used to have would burp up fuel all the time. Inverting the nozzle did help a lot with the problem. (I had that thing for 10+ years and miss it)

Come to think of it, I have to run the nozzle about half throttle on my Aspen also. Otherwise it keeps shutting off or worse,,,,,,,,,,,spits fuel out down the side of the 1/4 panel.

Mine does this almost every time. Afraid to get a new paint job for fear I'm just going to ruin it.
The vent return to the tank might need some intervention. I know my dad put a purge valve up at the canister. So he popped the hood everytime and opened the line at the canister when fueling

I wonder what the purpose of the tongue was?
IDK. I suspect as an anti-siphoning mechanism?
All it does is give grief.

My ’77 is fine.
My ’86 5th Ave you can’t go over ½ throttle or it shuts off.

Now that said, I fixed a flat on my ’77 wagon and decided to peek around before putting tire back on.
My fuel tank filler neck grommet is badly cracked:

Pictures do not do the justice needed to show how bad it is.

I do have new grommets in my garage – so no worries there, and surprised it’s not leaking fuel at this time.

Yep, my grommet was that bad when I replaced it. Big chunks missing. I knew I had to fix it before smogging the car. A pretty simple procedure.
