I think I need to do a rear axle gear oil change. 1988 5th ave 32,000 original miles with the original rear axle oil. The rear axle oil is full with no drips, just a little sweating. Do you think I should use a gasket, or Permatex gear oil gasket maker ? I can see the original orange RTV sealant around the cover. Is there a specific gear oil that would be best. it is an occasional driver car right now. Thanks for the advice.

May as well use RTV again. Mopar actually has a specific red RTV made for diffy covers. Any kind would work but other than the red, ultra-grey is good for sheet metal covers too.

Not sure your opinion of synthetic but that's what I'd recommend in a 75W90 or 75W140. Something like Royal Purple or equivalent. Otherwise use 75W140 conventional.

I like synthetic oils, although I am not sure if it would leak out of old seals. I appreciate your advice.

I would love to have the time to do the seals, but for now it will just be a fluid change.
