I'm seriously considering painting the Volare gloss black
Going with the roller idea that Blackbird did with his Barracuda
I know this will require wet sanding in between coats.
Since I'm not a pro at this by any stretch can someone explain the proper theory/technique to this procedure?
Thank you in advance.....

Yes I would be glad to..
First sand the car down past the clear coat. DONT use electric orbital sander. it is way to easy to creat high and low spots. I used a regular sanding block for all the prep work. dont use to low a grit sandpaper because you will just be fighting scratches in the next steps.

you are going to need to sand the car all over with a block starting with 600 grit. with the rustoleum paint job there is no need to prime the car before you paint just as long as you sand it well. If you are doing body repairs make sure you have all the bare metal primed

tape off all things you dont want painted like windows and such

now that you have the car all block sanded and straight wipe the car with acetone make sure ALL the powder from sanding is gone.

mix the paint in small batches starting with a 2 parts paint 1 part mineral spirits ( dont use the milky white mineral spirits use the clear kind.) the paint is ready when you dip the roller in and it starts to drip after a "one one thousand"

this is CRITICAL this is done one coat at a time and it take 24 hours to dry dont recoat before 24 hours it will bubble up and krinkle.

after the first coat is dry wet sand with 800 grit sand paper. paint another coat wait 24 hours then wet sand with 800grit again.

third coat we move up to 1000

fourth coat we move up to 1500

fifth coat we move up to 2000 yes 5 coats is the magic number.. now comes the secret to this elcheapo paint job..

you will need an electric buffer and a CLEAN buffing pad and a bottle of Meguires Ultimate Compound.. it has to be the Ultimate compound DONT USE ANYTHING ELSE. the meguires cuts the paint chemically with no abraisives and comes out WAY WAY WAY smooth. Trust me

As for technique with sanding I use a hand block. to do it right you have to change directions sanding often and evenly sand the entire panel you are working on meaning dont stay in one place longer than others. also you will be feeling the body of the car you will be able to tell what each level of sanding feels like by running your hand over spots to feel for roughness or high spots. also DONT push hard on the paper let the sand paper do the work. also the paper will wear out you will know because it will just stop working well. and when you are getting up there into the high grit papers be very carfull not to let a piece of sand get between the sand paper and the car body. you will get some really deep scratches from that.

I didn't but you can shoot a clear over it no problem. I just waxed mine.

Won't even bother.
I was just wondering cause your Barracuda looks killer.
Wax works for me.
Again.....thanks a million for your instructions!
I'm totally looking forward to doing this!

There is no post for it really.
He posted a pic of it and said it was a roller job.
Blew me away....I've done flat roller jobs but never gloss.
I'm gonna do the Volare black like this and Blackbird just gave me the tutorial.....

I like Mothers myself. I use nothing else. That stuff will make any decent paint job or clear coat or chrome really pop on shine and it is a great product on oxidation too. Right on the money Blackbirdsrt78.
