This is only a guess but, do you have auto climate control? If so, it could be the air intake for the aspirator sensor (senses interior air temp). There would be a tube attached to the rear of it that leads to the blower housing.

Thanks gents......the car doesnt have auto climate control....as far as I can tell.....

I believe all M's had the hole regardless...but the purpose was for the interior air temp sensor. A single casting...cheaper.
