M-body Motor Mount Inserts and Bolts

Thanks for the reply. You basically summarized everything that I learned by suffering through the process with no prior knowledge. I invented new curse words throughout that painful debacle  Got the motor and trans mounts buttoned up yesterday!

M-body Motor Mount Inserts and Bolts

Any advice on removing the passenger side motor mount? The driver side was straightforward. I have the anchor bolt removed on the passenger side, but jacking from the pan, I can only get the engine raised an inch or so before it won't go up anymore. I can't see why it won't raise up anymore...

M-body Motor Mount Inserts and Bolts

I made the mistake of buying "Made in India" engine mounts from O'Reilly, branded Power Torque. The bolts in my factory mounts appear to be 1/2" in diameter, and the new mounts seem to have 9/16 or slightly larger sleeves through the rubber bushings. Can anyone confirm that the bolt that goes...

Wow, that sucker was really stuck. Lots of turning and yanking, and it finally came out. Thanks everyone!

A904 Dipstick Tube Removal - 88 Fifth Avenue

Greetings - How do I remove the dipstick tube on an A904? Engine/trans are out of the vehicle. I removed the bolt to the tether than bolts to the bellhousing. I lifted up on the tube, and it won't come out. Everything I've read says the tube should lift out. What am I missing? Does it secure...

1988 Fifth Avenue Cooling System Performance

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, the shroud is present. Not sure if there's an air dam present - I'll look. I'll try some Water Wetter too after a flush to see if that helps.

I'm sorry :D:D:D J/k, the weather sucks here (Phoenix) for half the year, but I'd never want to leave. It's always been home to me.

1988 Fifth Avenue Cooling System Performance

AZ is full of mountains, so it's not a good comparison of results - my trip was 154 miles with a 5883 foot elevation increase, but I see what you're getting at. The common thread in everybody's replies so far is flushing the cooling system, so I'll start there and see what happens. Thanks for...

1988 Fifth Avenue Cooling System Performance

The car wouldn't hold speed in 3rd up a 6% grade with two 250lb guys, an ice chest full of b... soda, and a trunk full of tools, spare tire, supplies, etc, especially with the 2.2X:1 rearend ratio. Not sure what the true temperature or RPMs were. I agree that's way too hot, thus my concern...

1988 Fifth Avenue Cooling System Performance

The car is fairly new to me, and I only have maybe 500 miles on it myself. The radiator looks ok, but not as clean as a new one. I haven't done a coolant change yet, so I'll give it a flush and some fresh 50/50 and see what happens. It's a hobby car for me, so it's nothing that needs critical...

1988 Fifth Avenue Cooling System Performance

Looking for insights to the stock cooling system performance in hot climates, up long highway grades. I took my 1988 Fifth Avenue on its first road trip after the Holley 2300 and GM HEI conversion on the 318. The engine seems to run just fine, and I don't notice any general problems with the...

I ended up putting $600 into it :D New carb, distributor, GM HEI module and coil, plugs and wires, valve cover gaskets, and some odds & ends. It runs beautifully now, and feels reasonably grunty like a V8 should. It's going to be a fun project.

1988 5th sputtering, shaking, popping after Lean Burn delete

YOU WIN!!! That was the problem! I swapped the leads at the ignition module, and got it started. Timing was way far advanced after swapping the leads, so I hooked up the timing light (which now flashes rock solid) and retarded it to 12 BTDC initial. Runs like a top now, and does nice 1-wheel...

1988 5th sputtering, shaking, popping after Lean Burn delete

Quoting and replying to myself o_O I don't think I can simply swap the trigger leads and expect the car to start. If indeed I'm triggering off the falling edge of the tooth, and then I swap the trigger leads, I've advanced the timing by the number of degrees that the tooth is wide, and now the...

1988 5th sputtering, shaking, popping after Lean Burn delete

The distributor indeed has a magnetic pickup. I swapped the trigger leads on the ignition module, and the car wouldn't start. Should I assume that I had them hooked up properly in the first place? Or is it more complicated than that?

I commend you on the very thorough explanation. Thanks for writing that up. I'll add timing set wear to my list of items to check, and report back.

1988 5th sputtering, shaking, popping after Lean Burn delete

Thanks for the suggestions. I hooked the vacuum advance to both timed and manifold vacuum to see what would happen, and it didn't change anything. Regarding the possibility of an erratic power source for the HEI, that's why I grabbed its power from the B+ terminal on the alternator - it should...

1988 5th sputtering, shaking, popping after Lean Burn delete

Thanks for the suggestions. I did check fuel pressure in line to the fuel inlet on the carburetor, and it stayed between 6 and 6.5 PSI. The only carb I've ever played with is the Holley 1941 that came on my Aspen, so looks like I have some reading to do on the 2300. I'll read up on how to check...

Long time lurker, first time poster. The short version is that I bought a $500 1988 5th Ave on FB Marketplace, replaced the computer control and carb, and I'm having some driveability problems. Read on for the long version. Thanks in advance for reading and replying. Brief history: The car is a...
