I am having a surging engine issue. The car has only 38,000 original miles. Always garage kept. The surging was mild, but now it is getting worse. I would like some expert advice of where to start. I was thinking to start with a carburetor kit, and if that doesn't fix it a new computer may. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Being it’s all original, or assuming it is from your OP, I’d start looking for vacuum leaks at hoses and carb base gaskets before you tear into it.

If you suspect the computer there's a test in the service manual to confirm it'd operating properly. Do the one from the proper year service manual because the values aren't always the same.

It's rarely the computer, usually something else.

I agree that check for vacuum leaks and other easy checks before replacing computer. Has it sat for long periods? With that low mileage, I'd wonder about bad fuel also. BUT my money is with a failing computer. That '89 FSM posted for you is good advice. Good luck.
