Hi;

I am almost ready to swap the drive train from my 83 fifth into a 87 Dip - nice body and color. along with the interior and exterior bumpers, grill, badges etc. So its now time to add an overdrive. I've carefully read and researched the excellent posts on Dippy.Org. concerning the swaps Unfortunately the two auto yards I contacted only search by vehicle. I know of the Dakotas but how bout the vans and jeeps that had them also. Since money is important I am going for the A-500 vs the R- 43/4 with lockout.

Go for an A518 4 speed overdrive with lockup torque convertor. They started in 1989 Dakota pickup trucks.

Just remember to don't go any newer than 1995. In 1996 it becomes RE42/46- means a lot of electronics. The Ram vans have the trans you want, but not in the short 109 inch wheelbase (My shorty 95 has the 999 non overdrive). Go for the 127 inch wheelbase. The other clue is the "OD OFF" button on the dash. Stay away from the grand cherokeesince the starter is on the wrong side so the trans will do you no good. So any Ram pickup 90 to 95, Ram van 90 - 95 and Dak like Eric said.

Also there is a company that make a throttle pressure kit to run the A518 tranny and shift it into overdrive. I can post the link if you need it.

Everyone for the great feed back.

The search is ongoing.

So far for the A-500 with lock up from a 318 (the 3.9 had fewer clutch pads)

Pickups with 2w/d 90-95
Ram Vans 127" only 90-95
Second choice (more money) Dakota 89-93 A-518 with lock up
Do I have it right? Any other/more choices?

For lockout the drive end for the last inch or so has no spline.
Yes, I am now linked to the great PATCO site.
