Sounds like dirt in the needle & seat flooding it. Get it running and have somebody tap on the carb, where the fuel line goes in, with a screwdriver handle to try and dislodge it.

On my carbureted cars, I hit the gas twice and crank for about 3 seconds. repeat as necessary, usually 3 times.

Loosen a cooler line and start it. If fluid doesn't gush out, the pump isn't pumping. I wouldn't think you could bolt up the converter if it wasn't engaged, but, Hey, I've seen stranger things happen.

When I did the same thing with an 88 Ranger V6 it was only about 1.5 more, but premium was only an extra dime per gallon 30 years ago.
