Hello, new here! I was fixing a transmission fluid leak on my 89 5th ave and noticed this mysterious plug that has nothing to plug into. Anyone ever knew what's that for? It was literally hanging down for years.

Looks like the speedometer cable goes through that. Unless it's something possibly for the airbag system so it knows vehicle speed I don't know what that would be. Never seen it before.

Oh yes I think you got it right, mine is an 89 with a knee pad but no airbag. I think this doesn't plug to anything considering my car has no airbag. It has the 87 steering wheel from factory. Even my other 1989 has it just hanging like that for some reason.

Was it an export car? All 89s had airbag so it's strange it doesn't have it but it used to be common to remove it and go back to the older wheel when there were problems.

My Father originally bought it brand new from Kuwait like that, has the 87 steering wheel, knee pad, and even airbag light on the dash. I bought another 89 like 2 months ago for parts and it was exactly the same (both had 4 barrel carbs if this helps you know the origin) I was expecting an airbag on that part's car ad though.

Interesting thanks for the pictures. I think it must be an export thing. 88/89 chryslers were the first cars to have air bags so those countries might not have tested and approved them yet. I always liked that different lower dash.
The 4barrel carb is also extremely rare. It typically wasn't supposed to be available on the 5th avenues but export cars are usually a bit unique.

Nice to hear that, I've always thought my 5th ave is kinda rare, it has the power passenger seat, 4 barrel, rear sway bar (someone told me they didn't come on fifth aves), 200Km/h speedo. I was shocked that the parts car also had the same spec. Uploaded a pic of the parts car's quadrajet.

Yes sway bar and the 200kph speedometer are two things that are police/taxi only and never on Chryslers.
Can you get a picture of the fender tag of one of them? Since they both seem to be the same It would be interesting to see what codes are on it.

The silver one is for the parts car with the same specs but no luxury package. I was never able to read the codes or understand what means what. I would appreciate some info after you check them out. What I got from one other forum, is that an "S" in the vin number on 5th aves means it has the heavy duty parts on it. It really means it after some further investigation.

Thanks! I'm not the best at codes but trying to look them up it only seems like normal stuff listed- rear window defogger, outside power mirrors etc. I was hoping it might have included stuff like the sway bar or rear axle.
The S in the vin only means its 4 barrel engine, noting more.

both of my J bodies have 318 engines 4 Barrel carbs (TQs in my case. Only available in California cars and High Altitude cars in the US, they were standard options in Canada. One is a 1980 Cordoba, and the other is a 1981 Mirada. the Cordoba is a Crown Coupe, and the Mirada is a CMX (with the wanna-be, but not really, convertible top). More of the export car deviations from norm on exported cars.

Cars going to Middle East/Africa had a different fan clutch and radiator, and very often an oil cooler

Mine does have a transmission fluid cooler in the radiator, there are transmission lines that run into the radiator. Do all m bodies have that?
