Hello:

Does anyone have some insight into the best way to replace the 3.5 inch speakers in the dash board? Working on an 85 Diplomat that spent many years in South Carolina and the fronts are roasted.

Looks like the metal frame of the dash needs to be removed as the speakers appear to be top mounted.

Thanks.

They go in from the top. You need to take the wood faceplate around the guages off and there are some screws hidden on either end on the bottom behind it and upside down going up into it, screws in the defrost vents, a couple below the glove box area.. The metal top and padded front with glove box come out as a single piece.

Thanks Mike-

Ordered new 3.5s for the dash and 6x9s for the rear deck. Using a stock Chrysler CD/Cassette from a 2000 RAM Van and adding a small amp in the dash. Will update how all that works out....

You will probably have to cut the speaker holes bigger, the magnets on the factory speakers are very small, just make sure you have a good pair of tin snips and a lot of patience, passenger side is easy to cut once the glove box is out of the way you have plenty of room, but there's very little room to work with on the driver's side with the heater vent right below it

Dan—you are 100% correct.
Was working on it last weekend was was able to get new Kenwood 3.5s mounted, but they are very tight. Not only the magnet but also the speaker basket. I will update with pictures. I am working on wiring the mini amp and running all new speaker wire.
