Not like I'd ever do anything illegal or anything. It's strictly a hypothetical question.
BUT if you ever wanted to de-smog a stock 79 318, how would you do it and still have it look stock?

Chrysler electronic ignition conversion (keep the lean burn stuff on the air cleaner, but empty/disconnected), pull the cat and just go to town hollowing it out. That would be a good primer...

Thanks for the info. I am planning on doing the ignition conversion and the cat will definitely see a pipe. Anything else?
Do I need to do anything with the EGR valve?
Any other nasties to be dealt with?
Eventually I would redo the exhaust. Possible headers.

Thanks for the help.

Of course this is all strictly hypothetical. :icon_compress:

Ok, one more try.
I know a lot if you guys know your way around this subject and have probably dealt with it before.

Any additional guidance is appreciated.

Thanks.

My general idea is, at the very least to get her breathing right.
Ignition swap for sure but no big (money) mods... for now.
Just want to deal with all the smog nasties that suck the life out of a 79 318.

I am aware that for real performance I'll need to get into cam swaps, new intake, etc.
But for now, just the smogger nasties.
Thanks.

You can loose the EGR valve and all the vacuum line routing by going to the Performer four barrel intake. Hollow out the cat or go with flow through cats and duel out the exhaust. Your car is still in the smog test region and mine is not. Put a Summit Racing ignition box in the glove box and make all the stock stuff look like it still works. If you have that vacuum line running to the radiator take the sensor out and plug it with a 3/8" pipe plug.

Thanks a million Eric. I knew you'd be the guy to ask.

BTW... No smog test on a 79.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

De-emissioning

If you don't have a test you can lose the air system too.

If you drop in a 440 you won't have to worry about the smog equipment...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but in Ontario at the moment there is no emissions check requirements for 1985 or 86 and prior vehicles.

As for going to headers and the EGR...

There are EGR block off plates available or you can just make one then get rid of the associated vacuum lines. The heads may have the smog holes you will have to weld up or otherwise plug when going to headers.
