The Long Story of the '78 Dodge Diplomat Restoration

ASC was a US company. I think that Canadian site is more an installer because here's another one. https://www.americansunroof.com/ There's a history of it here. https://www.hagerty.com/media/automotive-history/asc-left-a-legacy-way-beyond-chopping-tops/ They also made the changes to LeBaron...

    Diplomat/Volare Vent Visor Interchange

They're the same, they stop at that window channel. The older ones like pictured looks like they're also too short. Maybe they could be made to fit by cutting a notch out of it to clear the channel and spread the ends out a bit?

The backing plates will fit the axke but they are specific to 10 or 11" brakes it's not one size fits all. When I did the 8 1/4 swap I pulled the axle shafts and left the backing plates with the car so I didn't have to mess with brakes and bolted them onto the different axle. I only have one...

The 80s M body axles were 1" wider then the older ones but spring perche to spring perch is the same.

You will also need the spring brackets as the axle tubes would be narrower on your 7 1/4. The backing plate for the 8 1/4 is the same as the 80s 7 1/4 and most other models from the 70s and trucks upto at least 92/93 so that should make them easier to find. You just need to know do you want to...

84 Gran Fury AHB The time has come for Resto

Same here. I did my 5th avenue website years ago which is still around but never got into the YouTube thing. Which is too bad because there's money to be made there.

    7.25 to 8.25

Most of us probably agree that an 8 3/4 is overkill but the specific point that was brought up was the opinion about how it is so much more work to put one in vs an 8 1/4 when it's not. I dont remember if jeep one is a direct bolt in or needs any modifying I think most people here usually look...

It's by far as easy as you'll ever get putting in a non stock rear. Drill out a couple holes bigger and it will bolt in the same as any factory rear.

Radio Upgrade vs Addon - Bluetooth

I also use one of those cheap transmitters. I was never big into replacing the radio the furthest I went was tape/cd from the 90s which is a bolt in.

Washer Reservoir and Coolant Overflow container

The washer fluid is the same other then missing the knockout for the sensor. The ead overflow is different because the 70s charcoal canister was mounted differently. The rad overflow is common to crack at that top stud.

WANTED M Body Front Sway Bar Mounting Bracket

If you drill a hole into the bracket and weld a bolt with the head cut off into it that might be strong enough to hold. Aren't the cop ones pressed and welded in? I can't remember.

It's a bit of extra work. On a car that already has the bigger axle tubes its a fraction of the work you had to go through to get the 8 1/4 in.

car shakes then stalls when holding down brake pedal in drive. (88 Gran Fury 2bbl)

Spray the throttle shaft with starting fluid or something else flammable and see what happens. If you're still using the Chinese carb you could try changing it. You get what you pay for... There are easy ways to diagnose these different things so you need to at least follow through doing that...

    7.25 to 8.25

You said going 8 3/4 is a major undertaking because nothing interchanges but nothing has to. Ok, with the proper sized 8 3/4 there is a bit of extra work. Like what drilling out the holes bigger? I do agree it is over kill for what most people do to these cars I'm not arguing that part.

    7.25 to 8.25

8 3/4 has 3" axle tubes and uses the same backing plate as 8 1/4 and later 7 1/4 so in the end its the same amount of work but harder and more expensive to find the axle itself... well harder to find might not be true anymore since M bodies have been gone for so long now.

car shakes then stalls when holding down brake pedal in drive. (88 Gran Fury 2bbl)

Start by disconnecting and plugging the port for the brake booster like I said earlier and see what happens.

car shakes then stalls when holding down brake pedal in drive. (88 Gran Fury 2bbl)

If it was because of the booster it should also have an effect when its in park and you said it doesn't. Stopped in gear it's idling lower then in park so with the other issues you've been having it could be there's still something not adjusted right that's showing up at that low idle. You can...

    Cop idler arms

Yes. That might be why some of them come with extra washers. Doing a Google search there doesn't seem to be any reference to the TRW one being a police part. It looks like at one point it was the standard idler arm for A bodies along with the other part numbers being sold. Oddly enough in the...

    Cop idler arms

The only difference between the cop and non cop is the arm itself for slightly different steering feel. There is no problem using the non police one on its place altho you might also need to use the matching pitman arm and possibly get an alignment. All the sites seem to say that TRW part is a...

Can I identify when my 5th Avenue was built from the VIN?

It might say on the label on the drivers door if its legible. Pretty much he only way from the VIN is if a dealer runs it and the info is still available. E is 1984 model year like you said.

    7.25 to 8.25

Yes, like I said previously 1980 was the transition year and could have either tube size. There was even a variant briefly in 1980 that had the new style cover but smaller tubes.

    7.25 to 8.25

With those 70s ones yes. The 80s ones have more in common.
