    Speedometer gears

I converted my Mirada to the early style. It's much easier to find gears. The adapter is metal not plastic so it seems more durable. The cable needs to be changed to an earlier version. I needed a longer one for my 518 transmission swap so it was a good time to make the change.

    Rear shock cross member

No, 1 1/2 x 1 1/2. A couple of installation tips: bolt the shocks on to locate the proper position, make sure the bolts can be removed, and check exhaust clearance.

    Rear shock cross member

My Mirada always made a strange boing sound when going over bumps. I couldn't find anything loose so I made a heavier version out of tubing since the crossmember seemed to be the flimsiest part in that area. I'm sure the shocks are more effective now and the sound is gone.

    Rear axels

That chart isn't entirely correct. In 1980 FMJ body axles gained an inch (25.4mm) in width.

    Mirada - Magazine Article

I just picked it up. Thanks for the tip!

Minor upgrade ideas that won't drastically hurt drivability or comfort.

I had 3.23's in my daily driver Mirada and I thought it was the perfect ratio. When I installed the overdrive transmission I went with 3.91. Gear swaps are the best bang for the buck.

    speedometer upgarde

I should mention that it needs to be the later version. The earlier version doesn't have the odometer reset button going through the gauge face like the J-body.

    speedometer upgarde

Surprisingly an E-body speedometer bolts right in. I found an original but I think they're reproduced now. I also installed the matching tach but that requires some cutting and splicing of the circuit board.

I finally had to admit defeat...

I had a fuel line leak once. Just enough of a leak for the fuel pump to suck air but not enough for it to leak fuel. It was on top of the frame rail under the control arm.

Schumacher SB to BB install instructions.

I removed the flimsy shock crossmember and replaced it with a piece of mild steel tubing. I would absolutely recommend this modification. It eliminated a "boing" sound that used to come from the back of my car.

    1977 SB A904 Trany Needed

1981 and later are the heavier duty 999 version and also have wider ratios. That would be my choice.

    Mirada Headers

I tried Blackjack and Hedman, neither of which would fit. I went with 340 manifolds for years which require a smaller brake booster. Eventually I tried TTI which fit like a glove. I would definitely recommend them. I was even able to eliminate the oil filter adapter.

    A-500 trans into 88 Diplomat.

Here's how mine turned out. It's not that pretty but I haven't had any issues.

Swapping from Lean Burn to the Mopar Electronic Ignition....

Once you get the proper distributor installed, you'll need a source for ported vacuum. If you're keeping your lean burn carburetor then this might be the hardest part of the job.

    Factory air and aftermarket intake?

This won't be for everyone but I did a cut and splice with a torquer ll and a performer rpm. My intention was to maintain a stock appearance.

Gask tank move for dual exhaust

The reproduction tanks all have the bulge on top. I cut the bulge off and had a patch welded over the hole. Then I relocated the vent near the filler tube.

    aspirator tube

Here's my manifold with the bolt broken off and my threaded plug repair. Apparently having the bolt break isn't a common problem.

    aspirator tube

I've pinched off the aspirator tube as Duke suggests and it works......until the bolt breaks and the flange falls off. A better solution is to tap the hole in the manifold for a threaded plug. Much more reliable.

    Manual brakes on J body

The top picture is a 1980. The bottom is a 1981. If you open up your 1982 firewall to look like the 1980 one then your stiffener plate will bolt right on. Bolt the stiffener plate onto the firewall and use a scriber to mark what needs to be done.

    100amp alternator

Apparently not as many Canadian cars had the 100 amp alternator as I thought. The ones I've owned all did.
  21. SRTMirada

    Manual brakes on J body

On a 1980 Mirada it's a bolt on using f-body parts. On a 1981 and later the firewall needs to be modified slightly as you can see in the picture.

77 LeBaron - Valve Cover Gasket Replacement

Don't overlook the possibility of a rough cylinder head casting as a source of oil leaks. I've seen some really bad ones. If you've got the heads off for some other reason it might be worth cleaning up the valve cover surface on a milling machine.

    100amp alternator

The 100 amp alternator is a real workhorse. It weighs 8 lbs. more than the conventional alternator. Most Canadian cars came with them due to the rear window defroster. You definitely need to upgrade the wiring harness with this upgrade. A donor car would be the way to go.

Chrysler Police Cars '79-'94 Book on Ebay

I found my copy at a thrift store. It's worth having for the information on all the issues that the police departments had with the transverse torsion bar suspension and the reprinted technical service bulletins.
