    Front wheel bearings

Just to button this thread up. I resorted to cutting at the race with a Dremel like tool till I could split it and pry it out. This was a Timken set that I removed and replaced with same. No tabs on the inner race. The FSM was no help. I could see no simple way to remove that inner race. I was...

    Front wheel bearings

Wondering if anyone has insights in removing the races on the front hubs of an 87 Fifth. I had to beat the outer race out. The inner race fits flush with the hub, no lip to catch a drift on. Been trying a few other things, but it does not seem to move and I am chewing up the hub. Just wondering...

    76 Volare Factory 4 Speed

Looks like a base coupe that probably had the interior redone and upgraded from original. If the car was always in Arizona, it can be hard on interior materials. I think the 4-speed in a 3-speed with overdrive, so it will be a responsive car, and economical at the same time. I sold these new in...

300 plus miles in an 86 5th Ave

Isn't it nice to be reminded of why you like the car. I have had mine a year, no trips of your duration yet. I will say that AC is required here in SE Virginia this time of the year. I am sometimes hesitant to drive the car when the temps here touch 90. Keep us posted on your progress!

    12/88 Fifth Avenue— Chassis Freshening

I have Hankook 727 tires on my 87 Fifth. Quite satisfactory. These have been out of production for some time. The successor tire is the Kinergy ST. Tire Rack lists them for $110 in a whitewall. I have read threads on the C body site that these tires may be made in Kentucky as Hankook was...

    Gas smell

I have checked carefully and there is no gas dripping, just odor. As Aspen 500 said, the canister may be saturated just with vapor. I appreciate all the help.

    Gas smell

Thanks for that info. I think I will try and remove the canister and see if it is saturated. I don't try and "top off" when the gas pump clicks off, but wonder if PO's did that.

    Gas smell

Thanks for the reply. I don't see any leakage at all, just odor. I see no gas leaking, anywhere. I did rebuild the carb last year, might need to re-check float level. I wonder if it would be useful to disconnect the large vapor hose at the canister and see if gas is present. I'm not sure if it...

    Gas smell

Thanks to this site and assistance from folks my 87 Fifth runs great with Electronic Spark and original carb in place. However, I now smell raw gas, and in the area of the charcoal canister, especially after shut off. I checked for vacuum on the hose at the top of the canister with the engine...

    Random Pics

Sure looks like Costco to me. This is what I have to do every time I gas up the T&C. I get closer to the island, but they make a point to tell you they have a long hose and these gas lines are shorter. Costco wants you to do this.

FOR SALE 1987 Fifth Ave.- Parts-What ya need ?

I see someone has previously asked about the multi-function switch on the steering column. Wondering about the cruise control switch. Thanks!

    Cruise control issue

Having an issue with my cruise control on 87 Fifth. Car has not been driven much for at least the last two years. I have used the cruise in the past and it seemed to work fine. Now when engaged, to set the speed it just accelerates the car. I have only driven in town and have not seen how far...

Lifting the 318 in an M-body

Don't get me started on Fords and oil can metal... I have never been a professional auto tech (which means to me I get paid to do the work...) I have a Brother that was one, and my BF of 53 years was also one. I have heard stories... At least neither was ever around when a car fell off the lift...

Lifting the 318 in an M-body

I guess the oil pan is going to have to come back off my 87. The front gasket looks like it is not in place and there is a oil leak there. Hard to see with the cooler lines in place. I read an earlier discussion on oil pan removal. Since the Y-pipe and all was just removed and put back up that...

    Exhaust pipe removal

Well, another mechanical saga comes to a conclusion on FMJ Bodies. Car is back together, runs and the only leak is at the PS box, and I will have to trim the new hose and get a better clamp. I again want to thank the members that took considerable time on their parts to offer what was excellent...

    Power Steering pump mounting

Thank you so much! The water pump is being changed as I did the timing chain. No coolant in the car. The air pump is still on the car, as is the bracket. I was wondering how that rear bracket attached (your red arrows). I'm going to use some grease on the bolts as they are not in permanently. I...

    Power Steering pump mounting

Got some light on the back of the pump, to better show the mounting.

    Power Steering pump mounting

This is an issue with my 87 Fifth Avenue. I have done some front engine work and am putting the car back together. I failed to take detailed pics before removing components... I have put the pump back on, suing the schematic from the air pump section of the FSM, since it has a air pump. I have...

    Exhaust pipe removal

I want to update all the folks that helped me with this project. The pipe is back in place. Not nearly as difficult as removing it. I did have to cut it behind the cat, as it was too heavy to maneuver under the car. I hope I can get one of those union type of pipes that goes in one part and over...

    Exhaust pipe removal

I'm thinking of not putting the belt back on the air pump when I get the car all back together. Just don't like that whirring. When I saw your post, it makes me wonder if not having the pump running could damage the cats, engine or affect the way the car runs. Do you (or anyone) have insight...

    Exhaust pipe removal

Thanks for the explanation about Federal Law, which is essentially what the muffler shop said. I'm also glad the exhaust on my car is made of SS. I wonder if anyone will make Y-pipes for these cars. especially the ones like yours. I was very concerned about damaging it during this removal. This...

    Ready to cruise

Very nice car and you are lucky, and the car is lucky. Good things all around. I live in SE Virginia, but grew up in NW Pa. It was almost impossible to prevent rust on your car where I grew up unless you bought a winter beater. I don't miss that!

    Exhaust pipe removal

I guess I should be happy the pipe is solid, as I can't replace it. Pipe is down, oil pan is down and now on to installing new sprockets and putting it all back together. Thanks for your help.

    Exhaust pipe removal

Life does seem to throw monkey wrenches at us at times, Just wanted you to know that at 2:15 this afternoon, the pipe finally came down. What a fight. I can see why you said a shop should do it. However a shop I dropped by to ask about that said Federal Law prohibited them from removing the...

    Exhaust pipe removal

BudW Thank you, I unbolted the hanger, but will remove the bracket. You sure are right about the pipe being stable. Hardly think they needed to fasten them at the manifold. I note your post to Just Wondering about going to a muffler shop. Problem is, the car is torn down and not running... I...
