What am I looking for on an 87 VIN for axle codes.
Pretty sure they changed year to year.

I'm more familliar with 66/67 VINs and it was the number under the letter A, Different numbers meant different gears, and then if there was a number under the X it was SG IIRC.

Won't find it on the VIN,check your fender tag in the engine compartment.I think chrysler changed to the VIN/fender tag in 1968.1967 and lower is different than your 1987.
 
Sorry- that's what I meant- Fender tag.

Anyone know what the specific codes are?
 
Part of my build sheet has the codes from an 80. I also got an 87 build sheet but its at another location right now. As soon as I get it I will scan it in. Most fender tags dont show the rear axle code

This cars tag looks more like what I'm used to seeing on earlier cars.

That diagram you linked to doesn't have as many places for codes.

I don't see a place for the AHB code, which is clearly on the car I'm looking at, as well as a slew of other codes organized like a "traditional" late 60's/early 70's tag.
The car has two tags if that matters.

A pic of them BOTH may be of help, for the decode...
 
2.94 would actually be fine with me. Might not be worth my time if it's 2.76, or 2.4x.

I think I did take a cell phone pic...

Axle codes arent always on the fender tag. Best place to check is the little tag on the rearend. Or dig for a build sheet
 
Do you just want to know your ratio or do you need the code?
 
I've been looking at some driver quality cars to fill the empty space in my heart for driving something old while my main project comes slowly along.
I've been looking mainly at Dusters and A body Barracudas, but I'd take a nice T top F or J body.
None of those are likely candidates for factory sure-grips.
It's always nice to have an extra sure grip axle laying around, and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth my time and labor to get it. If it's a 2.94, I'll get it, if it's a 2.4x, probably not.
