My 1978 Aspen Super Coupe is back on my project list. Problem is an old employee took the dash completely out to weld up a rust hole. That was 20 years ago. Problem is, I have to reassemble it. I have a parts manual now and a service manual on the way. Todays question: Did they put an insulation board of any type on the firewall inside the cabin? I would think so, but I can not find one.
 
I actually have no idea. I suspect it would be neigh impossible to find one. That being said, if I were that deep in a project, I'd take the opportunity to cover any bare metal on the interior firewall with Dynamat or similar acoustic deadening material. Putting it under carpets, in the doors, and/or in the trunk seriously quiets these old rides down. For not a lot of money, you can give an old car that "bank vault" feeling by deadening all those 2nd and 3rd order resonances.
 
I can't recall if there's something on the firewall off hand (I'm sure there would have been something), but there is a thin jute-like insulator on the underside of the cowl, that wraps up towards the windshield. When building my Aspen, I lined the firewall, cowl and floors with Eastwood's version of DynaMat. On the underside of the roof, I used foil faced "Hot Rod Insulation from Speedway Motor's.

Like Cordoba1 said, to find original insulation in useable condition would be about impossible.

E-Bay has Under Dash insulation and firewall sound deadener insulation pad by Collectors Auto Supply. No picture. Wondering if this is what I need.

Nice job on the Dynamat! After looking at several photos on this site, it looks like there two pieces of sound deadner/insulation. One piece goes along the lower portion and one goes below the cowl. Jute material with vinyl outer layer. held on by screws and spray adhesive. I love Dynamat, just wanting to stay original as possible.
 
Collectors lists a pre-cut insulation pad on their web site and shows a generic picture (just a big square, not the actual part) of the material but it doesn't say specifically what it's for. Suppose you'd need to call and ask.

You could buy a roll of the material and cut your own also. Something like this:

Seems they used to have it unfaced also when I built my car, but don't see it now.
 
There should be one for AC and one for non-AC, I have never heard or seen a repo firewall pad for F+M Bodies.With no pictures of it I would be a little leary of spending your hard earned money on it.
 
I'd like to know where you got it so I can get one.
 
PLY-FWP-110 is Collectors part number for Volare; DOD-FWP-100 is for Aspen. Two different part numbers, two different prices. Odd. Has anyone seen one? These are firewall pads.
 
There would not be a difference between Dodge or Plymouth (or Chrysler, as far as that goes) BUT it does make a difference between years and A/C vs. no-A/C.

All F/M-body A/C cars have a break between '76-79 and FMJ '80 to '89. The Firewalls are different as well as the angle of the A/C expansion valve (the '76-79 A/C cars, the expansion valve sits sorta straight across where as the newer expansion valves sit at a steep angle.

Also notice the duct that connects the blower housing to the heater/evap case.

There is no duct extending into engine compartment (photo kinda cut that off, though). Also the heater hoses are side-by-side instead of top/bottom.

The the non-A/C firewalls were the same from '76 to '80 and maybe later. Not enough '81 and newer no-A/C cars in my parts to look at.

I can see three different firewall pads:
'76-79 FM A/C
'80-89 FMJ A/C
'76-80 FMJ no-A/C (and maybe later)
I'm not sure about the newer no-A/C cars - so maybe a forth design.
