I didn't know which part of the forum to post this question in. So I figured I would throw it here. Is Mopar Neutral Safety Switch 3747361 the right part number for the A998/A999 transmission? I have an 87 Diplomat and it looks like the coil was arcing over to the wiring for the neutral safety switch. Made for a hell of a drive home.

Rock auto shows it for newer vehicles but doing a quick search I couldn't find much that had a listing for that number.
The wrong switch wouldnt cause that problem tho, it just won't work or plug in. It does both starting and backup lights.

Yeah I'm looking to replace the one that's there. Since the coil was using it as a ground apparently. The wiring was bad and i didn't notice until it started smoking. I thought the lean burn was being difficult. Nope. Just old wires going poof! Fun times.

I've got that on my ePay watch list. Other ebay sellers say it won't work. There's obviously some confusion. Summit was selling these for $12 but now they're out of stock. Maybe a better way to ask this is if anyone knows for sure that this part number supercedes P5007747. I'd hate to get it installed and find out it's 1/32 of an inch too long or something

In case anyone is curious as to how the coil managed to arc across to the neutral safety. There's a break in the insulation you can just make out by the tip of my finger. Some goober has been in here before. The arcing managed to burn the wrap off the wire. Also I'm pretty sure there's supposed to be a ground strap here somewhere for the coil mount but I could be wrong 20230411_103043.jpg20230411_103116.jpg20230411_103226.jpg

The one I replaced on my 88 had the long hex body. But according to the mopar psrts sites that is the current part number for our cars.

No ground go the coil mount itself but there should be a stranded one from back of the block to fire wall on that side.

Anyone have any suggestions on better places to mount the coil? Down the inside fender seems like a great way to accumulate grime and junk

places to mount the coil
The one on my 1988 Diplomat rusted out because it was mounted under the cowl drain! I think I put some silicone sealant around the coil mount bracket so crap wouldn't collect there. Chrysler used to mount the coil on the intake manifold before they had to make room for all the electronic controls.

Something definitely was chewing on the positive coil wire. I spliced in a new wire in and threw a new coil in. I'm hearing a ticking somewhere in the dash/behind the firewall behind the voltage regulator and I'm worried something is shorting or arcing. It's not the regulator as far as I can tell.

I know it isn't the packrat that attacked my LeBaron.
I successfully killed it with a hoe as it tried to run for the hills.
But the damage those beasties do is horrid.

This is just a housekeeping post for the next poor bastard that comes across this thread on the internet with the same question.

This is the short neutral safety switch and it fits and works. I have reverse lights again!
