As I have laid my hands on a 8 1/4" rear axel for her I have had some valuable tips regarding swapping from 7 1/4". The axel is in fine fettle and complete.
I know I have to have a shorter differential and that represent no problem as a friend of mine has the correct one here in Norway.

But: The problem are the backing plates for the rear springs. Part numbers 3845128 -9. They seem unobtainable but again: I have been informed that the later ones with part number 4014710-711 will fit. I see from the spares book 1983 that those fits both axels. Attached a copy of the spares book.

Anybody of our wonderful members who may confirm this please? It should be easier to find and as far as I see the only difference is the bracket for the sway bar. All hints and tips where to find a pair is most welcome. So far a lot of members have helped me for which I am most grateful.

Take care all of you these days and safe driving.'

All the very best.

Spring plates, numbers 4014710 and 4014711 can be used in place of spring plates, numbers 3845128 and 3845129. The only difference is the bracket for the rear sway bar end link mount which is welded onto the plate.

4014710 and 4014711: (NOTE: shock absorber and spring parts are not shown to highlight the sway bar specific parts.)

U-bolts ("Clip"), are the same for both plates, part number 3845264. 4-3/8" Length, 7/16-20 Thread.

I'm cleaning up mine now for my replacement 7.25 to 8.25. They're in rough shape but complete including the
rubber isolators. A lot of scale and on the tops have some rust decay. They are the 3845128-9. They do have provisions
for sway bar but car originally did not come with one. A lot of work with wire wheels and wire brushes as well as
a drill grinding wheels to clean up edges. Have primed them with Rusto-o-leum rust spray then good coat of flat
black. Rubber isolators scrubbed as well then treated with some rubber protector. I haven't as yet been able to
locate four u-bolts that are factory style. Need to find a drive shaft and not known at this time if any of my 7.25
parking brake mechanisms will fit onto the 8.25 backing plates.

In case you're not aware, there are poly spring isolator pads available, if needed or wanted.

For U-bolts, you can get them at a parts store. Match them up by diameter and center to center spread distance. In most cases, you will need to cut them to length as they're "universal" parts.

Sorry for late answer but thanks a million for your advice. I have got hold of a few spring solator pads but seem to recall I had that done way back in th 1990's. U-bolts minor problem as they may be bought locally.

Parking brake parts are the same 7.25 to 8.25. There might be differences going to 11" brakes.

Thanks for that info !!! Just got through stripping and painting shock plates. Will need a drive shaft to complete (hopefully) bolt in. Only other item I'm probably going to need will be new leaf spring bushings. Not sure who makes the replacement oval bushings. Don't really want poly's, prefer to get a stock set but will settle for what's available. 10" brakes as well. Not sure at this point if 7.25 drums will work so I may need them. Trying to have all the needed parts before I commence the swap.
