Craigslist Find: A Don Garlits Built 1984 Chrysler New Yorker With A Dual Quad 440 - UPDATE: GARLITS CLEARS THE AIR! - BangShift.com

Was cleaning up my bookmarks and stumbled upon this gem. Some shmuck found himself in the possession of this '84 Fifth Avenue that Don Garlits built for shits and thinks it's gold after watching an episode of Mecum's. Wanted $50k at the time for the car. It's worth a read just for the chuckles. Go through the comments too.

Half debated posting this in the humor forum.

It probably ended up in storage, forgotten about, rotted out, or someone's family got ahold of it, didn't know what it was, and scrapped it

Super weird that this was posted yesterday, but I'm the son of the dude who owned this car. We — the family — still have it. Far as the "schmuck" who found himself in possession of it, he died almost 10 years ago. As to why he was selling it, he wound up getting sick and we were hard up for cash. He hadn't told my mom and I yet, I guess, and I imagine he was trying to get rid of it as part of putting his affairs in order.

My dad was a little eccentric and kooky, but he was a good man to those who knew him.

The funniest part of this whole thing I guess is that I remember when my dad bought it. His thought process was, "Garlits is a Mopar legend. God forbid he passes away, this is *just* the kind of quirky piece of history that's going to stand out to collectors."

Meanwhile, my old man is long gone and Garlits is still alive and kicking lol. Crazy.

I posted a video of my bike running to instagram this morning and a buddy of mine replied, "When are we gonna get that Chrysler in the background running?" I told him the story of the car and he didn't believe it, so I went googling to find some of the shit talking my dad endured after posting it for sale lol.

Unfortunately, after my dad died, I couldn't really stand to look at this car, and it's sat ever since. It's in pretty rough shape these days. That cloth top needs to be re-done, the paint needs to be re-done, I'm sure the nitrous lines need to be re-done, etc. But the glass work is still in tact, which I think was the most special/interesting part of the car.

My dad absolutely loved this thing.

For some weird reason, seeing all of this now actually made me smile. Seeing this thread pop up feels like a sign that I guess maybe it's time to get it fired back up. I don't wanna get all hippidy dippidy here, but thanks OP for making this post at this random and weird moment. You just lit a fire under my ass.

What an awesome story. I had forgotten all about that car till today, but having owned a few Fifth Ave's myself, I've often done Google searches to see what was out there and I remember seeing this at one point. It may or may not be cheap, but once it's running that feeling you'll get will be all worth it.

Well, don't I look like a horse's ass? Dying man attempts to secure money for his family and I call him a schmuck. Not the first time I've worn egg, won't be the last. Sorry about your loss.

Keep the fire the lit and start turning wrenches. We'd love to see it resurrected here.

Cool car, it will bring some $$$ esp in today's overinflated old car/junk car prices
Running that car thru one of the big auctions will bring a fair dollar to the car. '

There seems to be such narrowness to the mind of folks commenting on others peoples cars these day like its 1970 instead of 2024.

Can we see a pic the OP's cool car?
