What is unavailable is what has been mentioned before, no confusion. 1976 & early 1977 gas tanks are shaped different, and their corresponding sending units are both unavailable.
1978-THRU 1989 IS THE SAME GAS TANK-I AM PRETTY SURE. NOPE. from dippy.org :

We got another sending unit for secondchance black bird from rockauto for pennies on the dollar
they are 45 bucks on ebay
you are right about bending the sending unit as the cheapest path to success
I picked this line of vehicles not just for the looks i like, but because so much interchanges between 76-89' It's a better setup than foxbodies despite aftermarket. We just have to look around more vice pick up a catalog.
