changing rearends or not?

my 77 aspen has a 8 1/4 3:23 suregrip but the sure grip is bad,my son has a 8 3/4 with no gears that i can have,should i fix the 8 1/4 or go with the 8 3/4? wanna put some lower gears in either one. thanks

Would definitely go with the 8 3/4 if it is the right width for your car. As for gears, if money allows, you can buy a whole rebuilt center section for the 8 3/4 with your choice of gearing, locker, spool, etc. Jus' bolt 'er in.

8 3/4 are good nvr ownd one but there hard to find from what ive herd.i have a non sure grip and a sure grip 8 1/4 i love the sure grip. and the 8 1/4 is pretty tough i think

If you mean no center chunk for the 8 3/4" like a 489 case the cheaper of the two is to re-build yours...they sell clutch kits for the sure grip but if you want an all new sure grip try an Auburn unit...it uses the friction cones instead of the clutches...I have one in my other car and it is great...M2C

PS go to Randy's Ring and pinion and see what they have to offer such as 355 Yukon gears...stay away from others they are noisy

If it's an 8.75 out of a B-body up to '70 there isn't much measuring to do. It's a fairly bolt in affair with just the rear spring hangers having to be moved a bit.

And the drive shaft has to be shortened to install the 8 3/4

M2C Harley...rebuild the sure grip unit you have now...find a good drive train shop to do it for you...

We have an 8-3/4 with SS springs it took a little work if i could figure out resizing pics I would post them. Your 8-1/4 should do the job if your ride is on the mild side. Cheaper to rebuild also. we are running 4000 stall with trans brake and 29x10.5 slick so opted for the bigger axle...Larry

If you don't plan on going over 450hp . I'd stay with the 8 1/4 , higher , definately 8 3/4 . jmo .
