What I have is a real deal 1968 Mopar good steel forged small block crank. No made in China crank like the new ones. It was ground .010 and .010 at first. When I removed the piston rods I scratched a couple of the rod journals. Thus the rods being at .020 now and the mains were just polished. I want $350.00 bucks for this real deal. Pictures don't do it justice. It is oiled up and ready to go. There is lint on the clean surfaces from the rag that was used to oil it. Pete's Custom Crank Grinding in Houston grinds all my cranks and for all the engine builders in Houston. I can bubble wrap it and box it up good for no extra cost. Shipping is your dime also. Low ballers don't bother asking me to lower the price. Instead google a Mopar small block forged crank and see the prices you will pay for a crankshaft from China.

Seeing as the 3.58 sroke 360 wasn't available until '71, I'd have thought stating the crank was from '68 would have answered the stroke question. Better bone up on small block stuff Shorty. :)

You may want to check with swinger340 on FABO. He was looking for some last year.

Eric, doesn't the 318 crank weigh less than the 340?

I have a 340 that needs rebuilding a little down the road. I think with SCAT I beam rods and modern/lighter pistons, a lighter crank would suit (sp?) the build better. I don't know about the weight difference or if changing to a internal balanced forged crank is important (do or don't) to what was originally an external balanced 4 speed motor in a numbers matching car?

I will run a 360 in it while I drive it...thanks for responding

A forged crank is a forged crank and the 318 and 340 are the same. Forged is what you want if your going to run some NO2.

Last I knew the 360 & 440 were the only 2 that were externally balanced .

No, they're not. The 273/pre-'70 318 steel cranks have a different balance because of their much-lighter rods. This is true of the truck, marine, and industrial engines as well as Grandma's '67 Coronet sedan. Less rod weight means lighter crank counterweights & heavier throws to achieve the same (internal) balance. Yours has obviously already been balanced for the 340/360 type rods, which became standard in 318s starting around '71-'72.

Every 3.31"-stroke small-block Mopar produced from 1958 through the end of 1967 had that same crank forging. There are literally millions of those cranks out there... they just need to be balanced like yours.

External-balance Mopar V8 engines:
  • 1972-'73 340
  • 360 LA & Magnum 5.9 (different external balance between them)
  • 1970-'71 383 w/cast crank
  • 400 (except HP w/manual trans built before December '71)
  • 1972-'78 440 w/cast crank
A 383 steel crank can be used in a 400 with the 383's balancer and flywheel or torque converter to make the 400 internally balanced. The late 340s were cast cranks, as were all 360s regardless of year or application.
