How many gear driven teeth....

Okay I need to calculate a new speedo gear for my car...the one unknown factor is how many gear driven teeth there are on an A833/O output shaft...these are the teeth that drive the speedo gear in the tailshaft housing....there are 13 on a 727 or 904 automatic tranny...I can count anywhere from 10 to 13 on the output shaft of my tranny?

Dontcha love answering your own questions? :laughing5: But maybe you can answer this question for me as I know you know these cars. Problem is my speedo doesnt work, hasnt worked from previous owner, but not knowing other than car WAS a manual trans car and now an auto, what is the difference from one to the other? I havent actually dug around under the car, so i dont know if the cable is fubared, not hooked up, etc... Are the cables the same from an auto to a manual or is there a difference?:confused2:

I can tell you 76-80 F body auto or manual trannys used the same cable and gear setup...you clock the gear wrong in the tranny and it will eat up the plastic gear in 1 second...the cable is pushed on at the other end...might pop off the back of the speedo if the clip holding it isn't pushed up...otherwise the cable can snap in two pieces inside the outer sleave..or the speedo head itself is bad...the last two are easy to check...drain the tranny fuild and remove the cable from the tranny...take the two clips off and remove the housing and gear...put the end of the cable in a drill chuck and sprin it in reverse real slow...if the needle climbs as you speed up the cable and head are good..
