Aspen wiper motor linkage/hardware

Hello all-

I'm new to the forum and to F Bodies, but not mopars! My name is Jared.

I'm looking for some help with my '79 Aspen SE Wagon. I just bought the car and going through it I noticed that it was missing the windshield wiper motor (w/delay)completely. I got a rebuilt unit today,and tried to install it. I'm missing the mounting hardware to the studs(nuts/washers?)and also whatever attaches the drive arm to the motor.

I did some quick searches and discovered a bushing that may need to be sourced/replaced. But I couldn't find any info on what actually attaches the drive arm to the motor? I see threads on the motor, is it another nut/washer or? Any pictures or help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm loving this site, lots of great tech info, glad to be here.

If Item # 12 is missing – it would be best to get a newer system from a 1980’s M-body (or at least Items # 12 and 13).

Wow! This is all excellent thank you very much! I am missing #12, is it easy to switch over to the later M body style? I didn't realize it would be so hard to replace the wiper motor! Should have talked the guy down another $100 haha!

If you have a local salvage yard or pull-a-part – get the wiper motor crank gear and the shaft that attaches to it – from an ‘80 to ’89 M-body (Fifth Ave, Diplomat, Gran Fury, and Caravelle).
The wiper crank arm will be a simple piece of stamped steel with a hole for wiper motor shaft and a ball stud the bushing pop’s into.
The ‘70’s F & M body’s – the wiper crank arm is more complicated and the plastic parts are getting far and few (ie: very hard to find and when found are $$$).
The newer style do not fail nowhere near as often and then they do fail, the bushing is the same as the other three bushings (which means, when the four bushings are replaced – you won’t have to worry about it for another thirty years).

I have one complete newer wiper transmission set – which I plan to install on my ’77 wagon, when it goes out. The wiper transmission has been put away (somewhere . . .) and if I knew where, I would find it and take pictures for you.

One other thing, the nut that attaches wiper motor shaft to the wiper crank arm is a stamped steel nut. Be sure to get that nut (same nut Chrysler has used from ’65 to ’90). I don’t like stamped steel nuts – but it works great in this case. Otherwise you will need washers and work to get a conventional nut to work correctly.

This one has the incorrect wiper crank arm on it (a pickup version) – but it looks close to what the newer M-Body uses.
Hard to see – but this one has the hard to find stamped steel wiper nut on it.

The next hard part will be the missing underhood wiper wiring harness (so hopefully it is not missing).

The wiring harness seems to be complete. I got a reman wiper motor that looks like the one you posted. I've got a member from Canada shipping me the proper mounting nuts,including the one for the wiper drive.

So, to convert to the M body style I just need the bracket that attaches to the motor, and the drive arm? Thank you for the wealth of info here. I appreciate the help.

You might talk to him about purchasing the entire wiper transmission, wiper crank arm and cowl cover, from.

IMO, it is easier to replace bushings in wiper transmission on the bench (using channellock pliers to snap bushings into the two rods, as well as to snap the ball studs into the new bushings), then install the entire assembly into car.
Be sure to put a dab of grease in the bushings before popping parts together.

I didn't realize that the M body cowl would interchange. I just posted on that thread, we will see what he says.

Body components, like fenders and tail lamps, etc. are different between the years and body types.
Items like frame rails and such are the same as well as floor pans/trunk pans.
J-body’s do not use bumper shocks like F and M-body’s do - so some differences there.

Park my '77 Volare and my ’86 5th Ave side by side then open both hoods – The cars look pretty much identical.

The dashes are different between each car line (F, M and J) but a person can change them as an assembly if wanted to, as long as you have the corresponding wiring harness to go along with it (exception, J-body steering column is also slightly different because of dash difference).

Several members here have installed M-body dashes into their F-bodies.


A recap of similar mechanical components:
- The front and rear suspension systems are identical between all ’76 to ’89 FMJ cars.
- 7¼” and 8¼” rear differentials will interchange between all FMJ cars (except for a few early 7¼” differentials need the differential to spring hardware to interchange).
- Propeller shafts are all the same but there are six different lengths (2-door vs. 4-door, 7¼” vs. 8¼” differentials, A903, A904, A998, A999, A833 transmissions vs, A727 transmissions).
- Almost everything that bolts/attaches to firewall or inner fenders are the same for all FMJ’s - except a few differences between years or vehicle options.
