I am probably very much the ONLY one to be impacted by this...but it seems we converted the back end to show SVG icons/images/page framework(s) and seeing as I'm using a fairly old OS, well, that's completely made the site unusable.

...yup, as in: I can't even REPLY/POST, which is a do or die thing, while I could overlook the missing notification icons otherwise.

Yikes man...

I lost all the reaction icons, so I can't even give anyone a thumbs up. Idk what they messed with on the back end.

LOL...well, not quite that bad!

So this is more of a web browser issue actually, not OS, but for the record I am running IBM's OS/2 4.52 SMP (which basically means it is the last release which ended support ohhh, some 10-15 yrs. ago I think???).

The browser in question is Firefox 45.9.2, which indeed is a galaxy away from today's "latest & greatest".

Keep in mind that the benefit to me has been "security through obscurity", and it does help that I'm an IT guy by profession, so my setup has a boat-load of tweaks made to it over the years.

Anyways...not sure what everyone else is using, but judging the the feedback so far this may not be an isolated impact as I thought!
 
I'm mainly using it on my phone these days and it looks normal but the ads take up most of the screen and one floats which is annoying.
 
Good Lord, what browser are you using that can't render SVG graphics? If it's that old you need to be wearing condom when browsing the web.

I'm sure the place holders are still there. If you hover the cursor over where they should be the alt-tag should still pop up.

Is the hardware 64-bit?
I'm using Slackware 15 with latest Firefox 140.2.0esr, everything seems fine with this setup. This combination will run on most 64-bit machines. It comes with Linux kernel 5.15.x. My machine is more modern and I can use latest kernel version.

Yeah, 64-bit hardware, but that's not the problem. OS/2 is a 32-bit OS, there are some extensions to enable the use of PAE for things like RAMDISK, etc...but the process address space is 32-bit with specific OS/2 limitations.

Our ancient Firefox is simply not capable of supporting the pages that are being produced today and which all use all sorts of "NEW" stuff...LOL!

Fair enough, of course the site is yours, but for what it's worth: tell me please which of the new features were necessary to close out/address gaps that the "new people" were complaining about?

Here is the thing (I'm a 30 year veteran of ERP implementations along with all the other Enterprise software that businesses run on): upgrades are nice, but general rule of thumb is that unless you know you have gaps, or the features you desire are only available in the NEW release, or for legal reasons you simply MUST upgrade, you normally stay on the current version because after all it costs money to upgrade, you always run into 'issues', and change is normally the opposite of stability.

My case is unique, but other forum members have pointed out the issues they are seeing...

LOL, I can't believe I'm taking the argument of progress here. Board software, like anything else, will only get security updates for so long before the version is deprecated and you're forced to move to the next supported major version number. With this comes new features.

I know you used to port forward stuff hosted at home. Ever check the access logs? I used to SSH available from the outside at home. Even on home internet subnets the access logs were filled with attempts to break in. It must be nuts with a public website. It gets worse because forums running old board software the security holes in those versions are public knowledge.

I hate SVG and WEBP and all that other shit too, but they absolutely need to board software on a current supported version.

Now I'm going back to my boomer chair so I can shake my fist at the sky and yell at kids who walk on my grass.
