Can I identify when my 5th Avenue was built from the VIN?

In the UK vehicle over 40 years old become exempt from our vehicle excise duty tax, and are no longer subject to an annual roadworthiness inspection. Can I determine when mine was built to the precise date from the VIN or is there another way I can find out? It seems it was first registered in...

    Wiper Linkage Bushing Replacment

I changed the bushes in my 1984 5th Avenue a few years ago. Put it back the way it came off, I don't recall having any difficulty doing this. I put a little multi purpose grease in the bushes before I put them back. I don't know if did any good, but I don't think it did any harm. Roger.

Anyone willing to have me mail them some cash?

The part from connecticutautoparts.com arrived today, seven days from paying for it to arriving at my UK address. Great service. Still waiting to hear about the 3D copy. Roger.

    Rear seat removal.

Thanks. I want to run a heavy wire to install a power outlet in the trunk, easy with the seat out. Actually I noticed a green wire with permanent battery live near the left (looking forward from the rear bumper) trunk hinge, but I don't think it will cope with a 12v coolbox demand. Roger.

    Rear seat removal.

I want to take out the rear seat from my 1984 Fifth Avenue. I'm sure I did this a few years ago but I simply can't remember how I did it. Help please! Roger.

    Optional Rear Shoulder Belt Documentation???

Is the reinforcement plate part of the kit? If so it seems North America is way behind Europe in that respect. Some British makes had 3 point front and rear mountings as an integral part of the bodyshell in the 1960s. In 1987 rear belts were compulsory for all new passenger cars with a rear...

Anyone willing to have me mail them some cash?

Thanks guys. I have sourced one from connecticutautoparts.com. They are charging me $27.00 for the part and $20.00 international shipping, paid via PayPal. I found them very helpful and will almost certainly use them again for sourcing hard to find parts. I gave one to a friend who has access to...

    Transmission fluid

Ah, I see. Question, I had my 1984 Fifth Avenue transmission rebuilt a couple of years ago, it shifts smoothly and doesn't slip. I have only used reputable equivalent brand Dexron D3 in it. Would I benefit from partially replacing it with atf+4 when I next change the filter? Roger.

Anyone willing to have me mail them some cash?

My 1984 Fifth Avenue is missing the quadrant and rod from its right rear door lock mechanism. To clarify, it's the rod with the pop up button for locking and unlocking the door, and the plastic quadrant it attaches to. Is there anybody here who has these, and is anyone willing to mail them to...

Removing door trims, 1984 5th Avenue.

Thanks guys. It's off now, an easy job but I didn't want to break or damage anything because of something I wasn't aware of. I took it off because the key was just turning and doing nothing. The rod from the lock to the mechanism had come adrift, it's back together now and properly secured...

Removing door trims, 1984 5th Avenue.

I need to remove the door trims from my 5th Avenue. I've popped of the trim around the drivers door, I guess I need to take off the interior door handle, but I can't find a way to get the door pull handle off. I'm guessing it is attached to the metal inside the door? I had a look at it and don't...

Temperature gauge not working at all

Does the fuel gauge work?. If so I think the problem lies in the gauge itself or part of the pcb circuit for the gauge. If all the gauges aren't working properly could be a faulty voltage stabiliser. The one on the instument panel, not the charging circuit. Roger.

Temperature gauge not working at all

I had trouble with the gauges on my Fifth Avenue, it was the posts on the back of the circuit board for the multi-plug connecter not properly conncting with the board. Patience and some time with a soldering iron fixed it. But try the simple and obvious stuff first. Roger.

torsion bar ride quality vs coil spring

A torsion bar is a straightened out coil spring, or if you prefer, a coil spring is a torsion bar wound into a spiral..... OK it's not quite that simple, but not far off. Production costs and chassis design are the main factors in deciding which layout to use. Other systems used have been rubber...

Looking for M Body headliner rods, or alternatives.

Ah!. That might explain why I can't find them.o_O Thank you. Not a lot of point looking for something that doesn't exist..... Are the moldings available?. Roger.

Looking for M Body headliner rods, or alternatives.

Finally got round to the interior of my 1984 Fifth Avenue. It needs a headliner, all I have is the two longitudinal bars that run down the each side of the roof and the front bar by the windshield. That's it, nothing else at all. :( I have taken the car to a few upholstery shops, a couple are...

Take the speedometer cluster out. A bit fiddly but not difficult. I suggest you replace every bulb while you're there. Sorry I took so long to reply. Roger.

Can I put the air assisted shocks in the back of my '88 5th?

I had the rear springs on my Fifth Avenue refurbished, brought the ride height back to original and gave a much improved ride. I was advised that the shock mountings aren't up to dealing with a sustained load, and as the shocks are at an angle to the suspension direction of travel air shocks...

    Wiper issues on a 1987 5th Ave...

I replaced the bushes on my Fifth Avenue, cost very little for a kit to be sent from the USA to England, I think they were Dorman brand. Took all the slack out of the mechanism. Roger.

    Cracked tire warning!

I replaced the tires on my Fifth Avenue when i noticed a few cracks in them. I'm really glad I did, primarily because I'm confident it rides on safe rubber now, but also swapping out the 225/70-15's for the correct size 205/75-15 significantly improved the ride quality and the speedometer now...
