My mechanic has done a lot of upgrades to my 1977 Volare Premier. My speedometer is about 10 mph off.He has told me that it will only fit a 77 or 78.It supposedly only on 1977 and some 1978 F-Bodies.The gear looks kind of like a hole saw.The one we saw on ebay was made out of plastic. There are two other that have the gear and metal rods.I hope I have left enough information,if not contact me and I will try to answer your questions

All I can find right now are 27 28 and 31 tooth gears. I may have others but I couldn`t locate them at this time.

OK, here is what the typical F body 76-80 and M/Js late 70 to 89:
plastic F body trans speedo gear housing.jpg

That black housing is plastic and there is a rare red housing.

What you need is a cable for an early 70s mopar from NAPA. You need athe aluminum housing with the threaded male end like this :

You got options and selection with the second picture set up. You will die waiting to find a plastic red housing and snap ring gear for a stock f body set up. You need about a 68 inch speedo cable from NAPA

Unfortunately that cable does not work on the 77 volare. The speedo head uses a different set up. The only year cable that will work is a 76 f body cable. My 77 had the red/orange housing and I changed it over to the 76 volare set up. If he has a 25-26 tooth gear in his he may be able to use the 31 tooth gear. It is usually about 2-3 mph per tooth from my experience. Plus it is a lot cheaper and easier to just stick in a new gear then changing the whole set up.

Do you mean where the cable attaches to the back of the speedometer? In my second picture, the white cylinder with the tooth latch is the only type I've seen on mopars. I know there are other types much earlier and later, but we just pulled a 73 cluster out of a charger and it had the white cylinder style clip (tooth). Something else might be going on. Do you have cruise control?

No, no cruise control. The 77 and 76 had the same type cable end at the speedo.

two different speedo cable ends...on the speedo end of the cable...
one latches onto the speedo head...
the other is held in place by a spring clip screwed onto the back of the housing the speedo/cluster is attached to.
speedo head is the same, just the cable attachment changed.
